Eight middle school students were hospitalized after they were caught drinking booze out of a water bottle and an AriZona ice tea bottle inside a classroom, a parent and the Department of Education said.
The seventh-grade girls were passing around the alcohol-filled bottles inside at William A. Morris Intermediate School, 445 Castleton Ave., on Wednesday afternoon, the DOE said. The water bottle smelled of alcohol, but the DOE did not say what kind.
"We're going to really discuss this," said Makishan Brown, of West Brighton, mother of one of the girls. "I have zero tolerance about this."
Brown said the girls were getting drunk in class, and she got a call from the dean about the incident.
"They never call me," she said. "I said 'its something.'"
The students were taken to Richmond University Medical Center by a teacher and a guidance counselor, where parents could pick them up, the DOE said. There were no reports of injuries.
The DOE said the school's investigating the incident and disciplinary action is pending. In the meantime, at least Brown's daughter might have more to worry about at home.
"I'm really upset with my child," she said.
Staten Island.
IMHO, the teacher has a lot of explaining to do. I wouldn't want a child in his/her classroom if the teacher was aware of the li'l darlin's sharing drinks.
Back when I was in school you weren’t allowed to have a beverage in class. If you were thirsty you asked to go to the drinking fountain, and if you were lucky the teacher said yes. What the hell has happened in America that people can’t go anywhere without a damn water bottle.
To whom? The union will back her up even if she was the source of the booze. Nothing will happen.
Legalize it. They are just going to do it anyway... < /s >
When I went to school, no “refreshments” of any kind were allowed in the classrooms. If you were thirsty, you could get a drink at the water fountain between classes. Seems like this rule was not outrageously cruel at the time.
Yes, more specifically, North Shore of Staten Island. The educated guess here would be that the kids involved were all or predominantly black, as is the particular neighborhood. Can't see how a teacher wouldn't notice the girls passing around the bottle and can and drinking from it but maybe teachers stopping that kind of stuff is considered politically incorrect these days, especially with DiBlasio's DOE in control of the school system.
When we were in school we didn’t have 10 min walks to get to the next class and only 5 min to get there
We didn’t have schools with 1000 kids per grade
“The water bottle smelled of alcohol, but the DOE did not say what kind.”
That’s why I always used Vodka when I did this in school, less of a smell.
Well of theys coulnt knows what kind, how theys knows it even wuz al-co-hol? Sheee.

Purple Drank.
It's hard to imagine what the environment is like in many schools. FWIW, the best solution is a water bottle even if it's a disposable one with the child's name on it. An even better solution in many cases is online home study public schools.
And why I carry a bottle of Iso-Propyl in my car; for sanitary reasons.
Something similar happened when I was in 8th grade (1977). A friend of mine brought some kind of booze in a thermos and got drunk at school. This was at a private school in Dallas. Only happened once - I think his hangover made him rethink the idea.
Public schools have Deans?
Lots of kids did when I was in high school. Keep a bottle in your locker and have a swig in between classes. More rebellion than anything else. Not to mention, the kids smoking pot in the smoking lounge outside (yes, a smoking lounge). That was in the 70’s.
Considering that it’s a PUBLIC SCHOOL were they REALLY doing anything that harm their educational progress?
If they take that approach, the prosecution will have to drop all charges.
We couldn’t so much as chew gum let alone pass around a tea bottle, although we did find the coaches 6 pack under the bleachers and drank it at lunch.
Yes. Often, they are the bulwark between total chaos and a barely functioning school.
