Farewell, Archie: Beloved comic book character to die
CNN ^ | 4/8/14 | Henry Hanks

Since 1941, comic book fans have followed the exploits of teenaged Archie Andrews and his friends. This July, they'll find out how he dies.

"Life With Archie" #36 hits stores on July 16, and CNN can reveal exclusively that it tells the story of how Archie sacrifices himself to save a friend.

Few details are known, but it seems fitting that Archie would go out a hero. The 37th issue one week later will end the series.

The "Life With Archie" series has been telling the stories of possible future Archie scenarios for the past few years, and so Archie will continue to be alive in the comics set in the present day. 14 comics that caused controversy 14 comics that caused controversy

CNN spoke with Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater (son of Archie creator John Goldwater) about the upcoming issues.

CNN: Can you explain the "Life With Archie" series for the uninitiated?

Betty or Veronica?

Like "Ginger or MaryAnn" and "Bailey or Jennifer", this is a false dichotomy. The correct answer, in all cases, is of course "both".

I think I heard they came out with a homosexual character in the Archie comics in recent years.

I believe there were two sodomite characters, and they got 'married' at a later point...IIRC; they were interracial, as well. They put the 'ceremony' on the cover of the book, a la Astonishing X-Men #51.

Puke.

I never understood the appeal of ‘Archie’ comics. Who the heck are these guys who are picking up some book about teenagers over some awesome superhero sci-fi mystic barbarian comic? That’s like deciding to watch the jewelry shopping network instead of the ball game or something. I mean come on, are there guys out there who claim Archie is their favourite? Or is it for girls or something?

Marvel’s “Northstar” A canuck superdude was gay back in the late 80s or early 90s IIRC.

The whole XMen mutant thing is said by many to be a euphamism for gays being ostracized.

That can indeed be read into it if one tries.

You can find one pretty cheap at a comic convention. They’re not really worth that much....other than the Christian values they impart.

Because “Archie” was based in Haverhill, Mass the following scenario is most likely.

Archie had a business on River Street that failed and was reduced to day work from the joint next to the Haverhill unemployment office.

He fell in love with an illegal from the Hill next to Lafayette Square and became addicted to smack.

The broads brother was a dealer from Lawrence and cut his dope with rat poison. Archie died a horrible death from an over dose in GAR Park among the winos who robbed him.

End of story. It was fitting that he died across from City Hall which was the High School he graduated from and now inhabited by a corrupt Mayor and a bunch of other useless trash.

Veronica moved to Newburyport and refuses to acknowledge that she ever lived in Haverhill.

Forgive me for asking but, who reads comic books anymore?

A lot of people, but the numbers have really decreased over the years. I blame the internet and the fact that so many comics have become "dark" and liberal. I still read and buy comics, but it's getting harder to find something that's not about environmentalism, liberal agenda, and near-porn. So, they're shooting themselves in the foot, chasing away audiences.

Personally, I try to support more wholesome comics, independents, Christian comics. Archie's not one of them ever since they added their main gay character. After killing Archie, they'll probably focus on him.

I suppose the question should have been, Who reads Archie and other similar comics anymore?

Well, I still have all of the Archie Digest from when I was kid. My girls love reading them.

Oh well, yeah, it’s probably time to end the Archie run, especially with all of the political correctness in it.

I read most of the Xmen titles well into the 90s. But once they started injecting the envoro/liberal agenda in a completely ‘in your face’ manner, they lost about $30 bucks a month from me.

Loved the art and many of the story lines as I’m a huge sci-fi/fantasy/horror fan. Stuff like Days of Future Past/Present were quite deep. But they killed it.

Always thought Reggie was underrated. Without his being a jerk, it wouldn’t be exciting for stories.

I have 20k+. They actually have developed storylines a long way from where they were before... actually some of the old ones were just as good if not better in that they were more subtle.

It’s great to stumble on great art, good story, and there are conservative as well as the other crap out there. Sure the same pablum as before exists, but that’s little different from someone doing 9 holes or a few hours fishing and tossing them back to get away.
