New analysis of two spear-throwers excavated nearly a century ago in the Ozark Mountains reveals what one archaeologist calls an uncanny similarity to those used in the ancient Southwest and Mesoamerica.
One of the artifacts an intact carved wooden spear thrower, or atlatl was first described in the 1920s, when it was found under a rock outcrop known as the Alred Shelter in northwestern Arkansas.
The other, a large fragment of an atlatl of a different design, was uncovered in the 1930s at a site called the Montgomery Shelters in southwestern Missouri. The object was foreign enough to workers at the time that the lead archaeologist described it in his notes as a magic wand.
While not identical to those used in the Southwest, each of the Ozark atlatls has distinct features that are analogous to two discrete types found in Mexico, New Mexico and the westernmost stretch of Texas known as the Trans-Pecos, according to Devin Pettigrew, a graduate student in archaeology at the University of Arkansas.

Just KNEW this was gonna’ be ray-siss...........
Whew. I thought we were gonna hear “chuckers”. Probably “code” for it though. Of course “tossers” has a whole different meaning in the UK.
Oops. Never mind. They used the term throwers not tossers.
Why is it so shocking that tools designed to do the same job should resemble each other even though they came from different places?
A hammer likes like a hammer no matter where it comes from.
Unless from Poland.
I don’t see a safety or a decocker on those things!

Oh Atlatl, Oh Atlatl!
I said yeah! yeah! yeah! Atlatl, got to get back to you
Well you can drop me off on Peachtree
I got to feel that Georgia sun
And the women there in Atlatl
They make you awfully glad you come
I said watchin’ them planes
I wish I was on one
I’m sittin’ here thinking ‘bout my crazy dream
If I could only be there tonight
Oh Atlatl, Oh Atlatl!
I said yeah! yeah! yeah! Atlatl, got to get back to you
We make a day and how just you and me
But the music plays all night
They got the boogie band blowin’ that’s bound for hell
And when they get to movin’ they never stop
You just keep on playin’ that down home beat
You just keep on layin’ it down hot
I wish I was on one
I’m sittin’ here thinkin’ bout my red haired dream
If I could only see her tonight
Oh Atlatl, Oh Atlatl!
I said yeah! yeah! yeah! Atlatl, got to get back to you
Wow, nice job plucking a bit of liberal media racism out of the obscurity into which they’d forced it. Kinda like Gary Trudeau’s Doonesbury “have you found out who your father was” joke about “Roots”.
/bingo!
That character sure didn’t last long on MASH.
