The Earth circles the sun once every year, but a startling 26% of Americans get this simple fact backward. They think that the sun orbits around the Earth. This shocking finding comes from a survey of more than 2,200 people in the United States, conducted by the National Science Foundation in 2012. The survey, done every two years, tests the public's knowledge of basic facts in the physical and biological sciences.
The survey is included in a major federal report, Science and Engineering Indicators, prepared for the president and Congress.
In 2012, Americans answered an average of 5.8 out of the survey's 9 questions correctly. That's a score of 65% barely a passing grade.
All of the questions on the survey are listed below. Take the quiz, then see how you compare to your fellow compatriots.
Questions:
1. The center of the Earth is very hot. True or false?
2. The continents have been moving their location for millions of years and will continue to move. True or false?
3. Does the Earth go around the sun, or does the sun go around the Earth?
4. All radioactivity is man-made. True or false?
5. Electrons are smaller than atoms. True or false?
6. Lasers work by focusing sound waves. True or false?
7. The universe began with a huge explosion. True or false?
8. It's the father's gene that decides whether the baby is a boy or girl. True or false?
9. Antibiotics kill viruses as well as bacteria. True or false?
10. Human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals. True or false?

7 is a theory, not established fact.
8 is dead wrong - they are CHROMOSOMES, not GENES that determine gender.
10 is clearly a slam against bible believing Christians. evolution has so many flaws and holes and faked crap and no transitional forms.
Or a lot of people are stumbling through life with an underpowered brain.
In my theory, the Hubble experiment only proves that the Universe is moving. Recycling itself. Eternally.
Well, they are saying that the center of the earth is hotter than the surface of the sun. They are also saying that the very center of the earth is solid.
We have 6500 miles deep of stuff that is up to 6000 degrees Celsius, and it’s covered up by 25 miles of crust? I’m buying thicker shoes.
When one bacteria loves another bacteria very, very much...
Richard Dawkins is a filthy little anti-Christian bigot.
But humans in their present form?
No, that seems to be a whole completely unique branch of its own.
Neanderthals didn't become modern humans. They died out.
As far as the Big Bang THEORY, it's just that, a theory.
And as we learn more about the origins of the universe we discovered that we don't know squat.
For a long time the universe was supposedly 4 billion years old, then 6 billion, now it's up to 14.7 years old.
Truth be told NOBODY "knows" how old the universe is.
IMHO, it's way more than that.
ANYONE who claims to know the exact age is just guessing.
So the "correct" answers on some of these questions are NOT correct. They are guesses.
Oops, left out a billion. 14.7 billion years old.
OK, well, there are lots of Christians who are also evolutionary biologists. Go see what they have to say.
excluding the big bang theory and man coming from lower species, I spiked it
I agree. #7 in particular. Yet to be proved.
I saw a “teacher” on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” unable to answer what the number one element in our air was.
He phoned his “science teacher” friend and they both agreed on Oxygen. I face palmed for them. My 8th grade science class in the old days taught us correctly that it’s Nitrogen.
State of public education these days.
I like the dimensional collusion theory.
and i have a biblical worldview and believe God created us just as genesis describes, made us persons, like Him.
Re Q#3: both the sun and the earth revolve about their mutual center-of-mass.
Even if you accept the Big Bang as an established fact, the answer to this is still false. The Big Bang was an expansion, not an explosion.
Eggs Ackley. Space and time came into existence in the initial creation. An explosion has to have something (spacetime) into which expansion happens. Spacetime was created at the initial creation. It is interesting that Guth’s ‘inflationary period’ is not called an explosion ...
But speaking in all modesty, I aced it.
