Images at link. This stuff is "cringe-worthy" not because we became more tolerant and accepting, but many elements of society became more thin-skinned and actually "get off" on being insulted and demeaned. Interesting that by the mid-70's Chrysler phased out the "cheesecake" ads and went a bit more "highbrow", like hiring Ricardo Montelbahn to tout the "rrrich Corrrinthian Leather". And they went bankrupt and needed a gov't bailout a few years later.

Chrysler didn’t require the bail-out because of poor advertising, but because of a poor product.

People who get bothered by those ads don’t have enough to do.
I have a conservative Christian friend who would be bugged by them, though. Just the other day she went off on a rant, saying she is a “conservative feminist” and she is sick of sexism from men. Said she has a problem with the Bible’s language about women, who can do whatever a man can do.

Just to take that first ad, being a redcap was a respectable job, with decent pay. And lots of blacks came north to the cities to get that kind of job.
Do they think the LBJ approach to blacks is better? Instead of encouraging them to work for a living, give them free lunches if they promise to vote for you forever.
And pay them extra if they agree to break up their marriages and bring up their kids as hip-hopping drug dealers, muggers, and gangsters.
Oh, and of course hate whitey rather than work with him.

A memorable Cheverolet ad, for a different reason:
I say "Yuck - don't buy a Chevy truck."

I buy a lot of toys for my grandson at Amazon, and you wouldn’t believe the number of reviews from women incensed over the fact that a toy fire truck has only male firemen. They’re thrilled when a fire truck, police car etc.has females or multicultural figures.

“And they went bankrupt and needed a gov’t bailout a few years later.”
But unlike GM, they paid the money back and early, too.

There was that VW commercial from 2004, which demonstrated that the Polo is tough enough to convert a suicide bombing into a mere work accident:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnL-7x4n4d8
VW was not pleased and threatened to sue the makers of the ad.
But then, we know VW are stupid capitalists, having recently favored the UAW organizing their Tennessee plant, which their workers proved smart enough to reject.

People today misunderstand why women are so prominently featured in old car ads.
Until electronic ignitions came along a cold engine could be hard to start. a concenient way of avoiding starting problems was for a girl to sit on the hood and use her subcutaneous fat layer to keep the engine from cooling.
Etymologists agree this practise was the origin for the phrase "hot" girl: a girl who could well keep a motor warm.

? Has there ever really been a woman outside a dime-store romance novel who yearned to be tamed?Who the hell does the author think buys 95% of those dime store romances? Women may or may not yearn to be tamed, but there sure are a lot of them who enjoy fantasizing about it.
Note the massive success of 50 Shades, as a somewhat more aggressive example. Vast majority sold to women.

I have no problem with any of those ads.
