Science Guy Bill Nye tapped on the podium, threw up his hands and said billions and billions in a Kentucky museum that has become widely known for teaching that the Earth is only 6,000 years old.
Nye was debating Creation Museum founder Ken Ham and promoting science in the snappy way that made him a pop culture staple as host of Bill Nye The Science Guy in the 1990s.
The event was meant to explore the age old question, How did we get here? from the perspectives of faith and science.

No, it just takes reading the text, letting God speak, and not letting you or Bill Nye tell us what it means.
I’ll get back to this
Likely not, but the Bible doesn't claim it is either. That number is based solely on lineage from Adam. There's nothing to indicate how long Earth existed prior to Adam and Eve's creation or even if Adam and Eve were the ONLY people God created. The story simply starts with them.
WE deduce it as 6K years - the Bible never states that - which is why I rarely engage in "age of the earth" discussions, too many unknown variables.
God created the heavens and the earth. EXACTLY when that was? We can (and do) debate that 'til the cows come home, and it can be a fun exercise.
Does it change the central message of the Bible that we are fallen and can't get up (on our own), but God provides redemption for us in the Name of Jesus (only)?
In order for men on earth to observe the stars expand, men on earth could NOT be part of the expansion, else all would expand equally and there would be no perception of movement.
IF men perceived movement, they must be the center of the universe, because we were not moving with the rest of the universe.
IF we perceive movement (expansion) is our sun part of that movement?, and if so, WHERE was the center of the bang ?
Our minds are conditioned to consider our sun as the center and all of our thought processes subliminally document ourselves (our sun) as the center of all time/creation .. whatever .... yet, we ALSO know the universe appears to be infinite.
I don't pretend to have an absolute argument to conclude for the non believer to believe, but I AM a believer, and the days of Genesis are 24 hrs, no matter WHAT some Kabalist says.
(btw ... if we ARE part of the expansion ... we are constantly getting taller and fatter ... toss the diet ... y'can't win against cosmology ... you're fat fatty fat fat )
Really? You mean the God Who decided He should use parables to teach us? You know, stories where the literal part isn’t the important part to take away from the story? Or is “parable” another case of inconstancy, and we shouldn’t let Merriam-Webster speak either?
The usual example for that is drawing dots on the surface of a balloon. If the balloon expands, all the dots get apart; you don’t have to be at an specific dot to measure the rest getting apart.
In practice that involves weird looking equations involving lots of auxiliar dimensions (beyond 3d).
Consider, for example, The Hammer Orchid
What are the odds that the orchid and the wasp evolved randomly into the perfectly adjusted symbiosis we see?
To quote Mr. Spock, "I have never calculated them."
If I start out as a 1/16" inch dot and the nearest 1/16" inch dot is 1 inch away .... as the balloon is blown up and expanded, my 1/16 inch dot expands to 1/8, as does the nearest dat ... and the one inch gap expands also to 1 1/2
(of course none of this is in mathematical correctness, but the principal is the same)
My 1/16" eye perceived the 1" distance and called it 1"
My 1 1/8 eye perceived the 1 1/2 distance .... and called it 1"
Because that's what I had scientifically observed when I was a 1/16 inch dot.
What's your evidence for that probablility?
I guess those who deny creation call this angel a liar too:
Rev 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Rev 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
And this angel:
Rev 10:5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,
Rev 10:6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
And God of course lied in Genesis.
And lied here:
Exo 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
And lied here:
Isa 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
And lied here:
Isa 45:12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.
And lied here:
Isa 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
And lied here:
Jer 27:5 I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.
That’s only the verses where prophets spoke God’s words. There are many other praises littered throughout the Bible that speak to this issue. Those divinely inspired authors were all lying as well. /sarc
The question is, do we call God a liar or men liars?
Rom 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
There’s absolutely zero evidence for lifeless chemicals magically springing to life all by themselves. None. That violates the scientific law of biogenesis, which has never been proven wrong. Just as there is zero evidence that a fish became a reptile became a bird, etc. None.
Men only learned to write and farm a few thousand years ago, but that’s all just a huge coincidence. /sarc
Can't tell you that. He's not here to examine.
ahhh, flowers. no evolutionary evidence of their evolution. they just popped up. all over the place. I think of them as the flowers on the dinner table and then the guests arrive, man created in His image.
Seems a little odd to start from the premise that we’re going to support a Constitution that guarantees freedom of religion, and then say “You only get two choices”.
Enlighten me as to why I am kidding myself. If you simply read the "begats", as you call them, and do a little arithmetic...
How is the Bible supposed to state that? It can't. What the Bible does state is the linage and ages from Adam to Solomon. And it speaks of some historical figures and incidents from Solomon to Jesus. If we accept the Bible as literal truth, as creationists would have us do, then it's not hard to estimate the age with some accuracy at 6000 years. It may be 6000, give or take, but certainly not millions or billions of years as science tells us it is.
God created the heavens and the earth. EXACTLY when that was?
Day 1. "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that [it was] good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day." Roughly 6000 years ago, as Ham would have us believe.
Does it change the central message of the Bible that we are fallen and can't get up (on our own), but God provides redemption for us in the Name of Jesus (only)?
No, it does not. But people like Ham want us to use the Bible as a work of science or of history, and not for the purpose for which it was intended.
No, by permeationist I mean I believe God works through evolution.
Uranium decay to lead produces a predictable incidence of various daughter elements. The probability of a sample being contaminated with exactly the right daughter elements in exactly the right ratios is astronomically small. Multiply that by the number of samples that are found to contain exactly the same daughter elements in exactly the same ratios, and random contamination is not a rational explanation.
The second assumption has been falsified.
Radiometric decay at rates necessary to compress 4.5 billion years of apparent decay into a space of 6,000 years has never been observed, with the possible exception of a nuclear fission bomb.
That’s true in a sense. The Universe is expanding but the expansion rate is INCREASING with time. As you go backwards in time, the expansion rate slows.
If you cannot show a transitory fossil then you are believing it by faith or fraud.
The fossil record is DRIPPING with transitory fossils!
