More than even Italy or France, China guzzled almost 2 billion bottles of red wine last year. Red wine consumption has skyrocketed in the country since 2007, partially because the color red signals good fortune, experts say.
China has surpassed France and Italy to become the biggest consumer of red wine in the world.
According to a joint report out of Vinexpo and The International Wine and Spirits Research (IWSR), Chinese oenophiles tipped back the equivalent of 1.865 billion bottles last year (or 155 million 9-liter cases).

The color red signals good fortune in a communist country? Okey-dokey then.
I like a good merlot myself.
I drink a ltr of red wine every day.
My favorite come from Spain or Italy in one ltr boxes, costing only about $3 per ltr.
If the wine is made in China, it probably is contaminated with 15 undesirable chemicals.
“Wed Wed Wine you make me feel so fine...You keep me wocking all of the time..”
As an aside, could someone explain why anyone would drink Chardonnay? It has no taste.
Sorry, I didn’t read the linked story. Are they talking total bottles, or per capita? I’d be very surprised if the Chinese drink the most per capita.
Not very interesting. China is huge.
Interesting would be that China's per capita red wine consumption has exceeded that of France and Italy.
i use 2-3 bottles cooking each year. alcohol gets burned off tho.
Hong Kong eliminated the tax on wine and beer and is now the largest importer of wine in the world. There’s an economic lesson in there.
This is from my facebook...an interesting slant some may consider if forced to debate with liberal tree hugger types

Obviously because it is in a cardboard box, and not a glass bottle. It is the same type of box that milk is packaged in.
That reminds me...both here and in Europe, all milk is sold in the same type of box and NOT refrigerated, unlike milk in the US.
Checking the rate today, it is $2.85 per ltr. for this Italian wine. The quality is on a par with Carlo Rossi, very available here at $5-6 per ltr.
When I first came here, I bought Don Garcia from Spain for about the same price. What I have now is from Italy, but in the same type of package.
UHT (ultra high temperature) pasteurized milk is sold in many countries with questionable refrigeration.

Are they sure it isn’t blood?
Chinese moderates drink rose’.
Thanks nickcarraway.
Japanese sake ( sa kay ) and sho chu ( vodka-like alcohol ) is sold both in bottles , and milk container-like packs which are a little cheaper . $ 3 is unreal for imported wine on par with Carlos Rossi , even for the Philippines . Lucky you .
Got to get over to Cebu and quaff a few liters with you , Alex .
Someone told them it makes you taller. They lied...
