Cleveland Indians Changing Primary Logo From Chief Wahoo to ‘Block C’

The Cleveland Indians are changing their primary logo from the traditional Chief Wahoo to the far less polarizing “Block C,” according to Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas.

There won’t be any changes to the Indians’ uniforms, and the Chief Wahoo logo will still appear on the club’s home cap and sleeves.

Fans probably won’t notice too much of a difference — at least next season — in the wake of this change. There will be less of Chief Wahoo and more of the “Block C,” but Chief Wahoo will still be kicking around.

Chief Wahoo has been the club’s primary logo since the 1940s.

Cleveland’s logo change is noteworthy, though. While Chief Wahoo is revered by many Indians fans, others feel that it is racist toward Native Americans. It now appears that the organization is trying to de-emphasize the Chief Wahoo logo, although the club has never admitted such.

I’m so glad that the very worst problem facing professional sports teams in Cleveland has been solved.

They could always add a nice hammer and star to that red sickle.

It wasn’t enough to tear down the stadiums of America’s traditions and passtimes. The history books must be rewritten as well.

I’m a Sioux Indian and have several old friends who grew up on the reservation (I didn’t.) They told me once when this logo controversy first came up that when they were growing up on the rez, one of the kids had a Cleveland Indians baseball cap that they used to take turns wearing because they all thought it was so cool.

They didn’t know that they were supposed to be offended I guess.

Amazes me that all of this sensitivity toward the Native Americans comes after we almost exterminated the species.

Gee, that's fun.

I still miss the old Massachusetts Turnpike logo.

Look at the new PC version. The fun police are keeping busy.

I hear of the same thing on the reservations here in ND; the most popular sports attire is UND Fighting Sioux.

Back in the early 90's, when the Tribe was the three legged dog of the American League and I was living in Europe, I wore a Chief Wahoo cap all the time. Definitely a conversation starter and especially with Ohioans I met. The Cleveland TV sport news used to show him with a couple teeth missing after the team had been bashed in that day's game.

PS: Cherokee and Delaware (Lanape) ancestry. If anything doing this will make the Chief Wahoo logo caps more popular than ever.

Indians facebook group still has Wahoo in upper left corner as part of a logo for Tribe Fest Sponsored by Key Bank. Also in lower right corner above a logo for INDIANS.COM though the C is highighted in red.
One comment: “We’re also ready for Chief Wahoo stay a part of the Cleveland Indians indefinitely”
