Soccer balls come in different sizes. The size used depends of the age, and possibly the sex of the players.

There are at least three sizes, 3; 4; and 5. Might even be a smaller size for real little kids.

So the Texans and Jaguars are out and the Seminoles and Tigers are in?

Compare the total attendance and viewership for MLB games over the course of a year--compare those numbers to the totals for NFL games, and Major League Baseball is far ahead. It's not even close.

Really? What if you look at ratings or sales of merchandise?

Since they play 162 games per season instead of 16, wouldn't you expect the total numbers to be higher?

No, she’s really big, but she’s standing about ten feet behind the little kid. It’s all perspective. ;-)

The problem with comparing attendance is sample size. 162 game season is going to have higher total attendance than a 16 game season. But there’s one telling fact that shows that NFL football is the most popular sport in the land: a couple of weeks from now the Pro Bowl game will happen, it will be terrible, the worst football played all year, and it will have higher TV ratings than the vast majority of anything other sports has to offer, including games of the World Series ( http://www.businessinsider.com/more-people-watched-the-pro-bowl-than-game-one-of-the-world-series-2013-1 ). Then in a few months pre-season football will start, and it will also be terrible, and it will also have massive ratings compared to the other sports. When one league’s meaningless games beat everybody else’s championships it is clearly the most popular sport.

Look at what’s happened. There’s now a viable and growing national league. Millions of kids are playing, at a time when youth participation in sports like football and hockey is declining due to cost and injury risk.

So yes. It has been a long time in coming, since I was a youth player in the late 70s and early 80s. For about forty years, the wave has been coming. Enjoy. I will.

I do think the tiered leagues are a great innovation.

The English have been doing it since 1888. It's a good system and not only does it reward excellence and punish poor play, it's also not the end of the world for a competently run club to be relegated.

Maybe not the MLS, but more and more people are getting into following the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

And now that finally UEFA wised up and decided to host the Champions League final on a Saturday, where people in the US can watch it, soon it’s going to be a huge event on the sports calendar even over here.

I even noticed that some local news sports reports are giving out English Premier Scores and showing highlights (and it’s not even the Spanish channel). That would have been unheard of a few years ago.

Beat me to the punch. I'm not a big fan of soccer on the field but I do think the tiered leagues are a great innovation.

If the bottom four teams in the NFL got dropped to a minor league, you sure would get rid of a lot of complacency and nepotism in front offices.

I agree 100%, but mainly for baseball, because

1. It already has a healthy minor league system.

2. Baseball has way too many playoff teams. Football has a 16 game schedule, so a lot of times the best team is NOT the one with the best record. Baseball has 162 games. If that is not enough to pick your representative, what is?

The relegation business keeps interest in cellar dwelling teams to the end of the season, where the fans will go to try to keep them out of the cellar, or maybe to taunt them into it, and pennant races remain pennant races, so teams will play to the end of the season instead of resting pitchers once a wildcard spot is sewn up.

What's fun is The FA Cup gives the lowered-tiered teams a chance to knock off the big boys. In fact last year's Cup Winner, Wigan, got relegated a week after winning the Cup.

Then why do regular season NFL games get higher ratings going up against the World Series?

This was about 10 yrs ago. Rugby was just beginning here, I think it was year 3 of the program. Now it’s got a lot of participation, because there’s no spring football in Indiana, so a lot of the football players do rugby in the spring instead of track.

They have also started a girls program which is on a growth curve also.

There is nothing like the excitement of a 1-0 game.

How boring is a baseball game if you don't care about the two teams playing?

Trust me, if you follow a team, you hold your breath, because at any moment could be that catastrophic moment that spells doom. At this time of year, every point (3 points for win, 1 for a draw) is precious. If you don't score a goal, that's at least two points you're dropping. Four teams are battling for a spot in next years' Champions league, and not much separates the top 8 teams. And the end season battles to avoid the drop, are every bit as dramatic as the top battle for a Top-Four position.

And because the Premier League doesn't have playoffs, the regular season games are crucial.

Now the way the MLS is structured is more like the other traditional US sports leagues, so their regular season games don't carry nearly as much weight.

yes, but single mom will still see soccer as good alternative to football, and will sign permission for soccer, but football would be over her dead body.
