I can remember back in 71-72, the oilers, supply ships and ammunition ships were all part of the regular navy. In Viet Nam we would unrep about once a week with an oiler and also a ammunition ship and about every two weeks for groceries with the supply ship. Every body from E-5 on down participated unless you were on watch.

Hated taking on ammo most as those 5” shells got awful heavy and was hot as hades on deck.

I read once that the carriers carry what it takes to largely supply their escort ships when necessary.

Not that I have any personal experience in this area.

Maybe others here can speak to that.

Avgas and they also carry considerable amounts of DFM that can be used for their escorts when other refueling assets aren’t available.

I remember we would sometimes refuel smaller ships like a destroyer in our group. The carrier can give lot's of other support in anything from Post Office to Machine Shop, Motor Rewind Shop, small engine shop, O2N2, supplies, full surgical and dental care, pharmacy, and lots more.
