Parents call police for help, cops show up and kill their 18-year-old son

Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.

The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidal’s father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.

An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, “we don’t have time for this,” and shot Vidal, killing him.

Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldn’t have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.

“There was no reason to shoot this kid,” said Wilsey in a statement. “They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help and they killed my son.”

After her son was killed, Vidal’s mother suffered a mental breakdown and was treated by medical staff.

The New Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office told The Daily Caller that no statement has been released yet, but the district attorney and state investigators are looking into the shooting.

A similar thing happened to a Georgia family in October. (RELATED: Family calls 911 for medical help, cops show up and kill son)

“He wasn’t just laying there, he was fighting them with a screwdriver in his hand.”

That explains it. It wasn’t just a pencil or a ball point pen...

If you were tied to a tree he MIGHT be able to kill you with a small crew driver. (if the kid was familiar with anatomy). With two cops on him, he might be able to “hurt” someone, although that’s doubtful.

Answer me this... Why is it that firemen go into burning buildings to rescue people and even animals, yet police can’t handle a situation like this without killing the person?

You would think that the cops (if there intent to protect the public) would protect the sick (mentally) first.

What am I missing here? I’m in my sixties and I feel quite confident that I could handle a 90 pound man or woman without harming them. For that matter, my wife of 45 years threw a coke bottle (they were glass back then) at me back in the early seventies. I wasn’t armed back then - I suppose if I had been I could have double taped her...

My God, some of you people are stupid.

“While the rate of police officers officially charged with murder is only 1.06% higher than the current general population murder rate, if excessive force complaints involving fatalities were prosecuted as murder the murder rate for law enforcement officers would exceed the general population murder rate by 472%.”

“he 5 cops who are in the nearest town ‘down the mountain’ from me are the best group of LEO’s/people you could ever want to meet. They would give their shirts off of their backs to help if needed. THEY can’t stand what is going on in today’s America with the out of control cop situation! Wake up!”

Put them on this thread. Let’s see how they react to the “commentary” here by some of the posters.

Yes it was very real for most of the 20th century. Funding sources dried up in the 70s. Advocacy groups said the insane were being treated like mad dogs in kennels and should be as free as you and me. Some actually do need institutional, supervised living, many just until they stablize for a few months.

As if that surprises me after some of the things you say on here like calling people you have never met stupid because they disagree with you.

She has, after all, been my wife for 45 years... Kind of negates your comment, doesn’t it?

“A 90 pounder with a screwdriver?”

A 90 lb. mentally disturbed kid with a screwdriver who was attacking his mother. Why did they call police if he was so harmless? I guess you don’t remember poor innocent little Adam Lanza either. He was also harmless according to family & friends.

Maybe the parents should have handled their own out of control kid if he was so small and harmless. But they thought he was enough of a threat to them to call police. I guess they didn’t take into account he would attack police while they were trying to restrain him. How do you know he didn’t reach for their gun? Have you ever dealt with a mentally disturbed individual while trying to restrain them? We weren’t there so we don’t know the truth. We only have the parents side who decided to go to the media claiming the police killed their darling, innocent son! While the police are being investigated.

She attacked you didn’t she?! So, no, it doesn’t even after 45 years.

We have a few on this site that broad-brush when it comes to police officers.

You have to admit, this kind of crap is happening way too often.

How are people supposed to trust law enforcement?

I believe the sentiment expressed by others here: "There's no situation that can't be made MUCH worse by calling the cops" is very valid.

Oh, they have cameras. They have cameras in drones flying overhead. I just saw a report about the Montgomery County, Texas Sheriff’s drone. It really pisses me off.

Cops are out of control and we’re allowing them more control. Practice your constitutional rights and you’re arrested. I once had a cop say to me “You’re guilty if I say you’re guilty.” Bottom line they can arrest you anytime they want. Even if you’re not found guilty it still ruined your day or week or month or longer. And it cost you. If you don’t have the money for a good lawyer, you’re guilty because the cop said you are.

I called the police once, and my opinion of officers plummeted. I called the fire department once, and my opinion of fire responders went straight up vertical. Those men and women are incredible! LEOs could learn a thing or two from them.

You can go right on hesitating....meanwhile in the real world.....in MODERN America, there now exists miraculous devices that are nearly universally present. They are called video recording devices. And on a daily basis these
devices capture irrefutable evidence that routinely demonstrate that it is the thug in BLUE making the false accusation, lying about events and committing perjury.

Something very similar happened here in Sonoma County. An older teenager with mental issues took his younger brother hostage in the back of the family car (they were in the process of trying to cart the older brother off to get help for his mental issues, and he freaked out). The parents called the Sheriff’s dept. The younger kid was released . . . but the deputies couldn’t get the older kid out of the car, and ended up shooting him when one *claimed* the kid went for his gun. (Much dispute about what really happened.)

Most deputies and cops are not prepared to deal with the mentally ill. Don’t call the cops on a loved one unless it really is life or death and you’re prepared for your loved one to buy it.

Daddy looks like a pretty big feller; I wonder why he could not have subdued the boy?

Just facts being discussed. As far as I’m concerned all cops are on power trips. When I meet one who isn’t I’ll post it.

All people lie and police have no monopoly on “lies”.

My son is a cop. I know how he thinks and what type of person he is. He is smart and good. I know men on the force with him, when they were boys, too. I know the parents. Extremely good people who raised moral kids. There are some fine moral policemen out there.

Our government is run by Marxists. They need to undermine all authority—and ruin, not just our military, which they are actively doing, but our police system and destroy all trust. It is planned. They are planting immoral people, to destroy trust in the force. They undermine the training with people like Billy Ayers who write the “training manuals” which is a bunch of PC Marxist cr*p to destroy Virtue and eliminate strong principled people. Despite this—principled people like my son excel and pass their rather low intelligent “tests” with ease and honors.

The government schools intentionally destroy Virtue in our children. The Christian worldview is being ejected for the Marxist worldview-—so we are getting more evil, jackboot people capable of great evil. Very True.

But, stereotyping police is the plan. Marxists are all about destroying trust and injecting fear—making people hate the people who are supposed to keep order, to control the masses and creating “perceptions”, so people hate the police or visa versa. Grouping and forcing hate/fear is their game. Looks like they are doing a great job.

Are our police morphing into Jackboots? Government is controlling the training and the direction/actions of our forces. It does not look good, does it? Evil descends from the top. Our government is completely corrupt now, as is our so-called “Justice” system. Corruption will take over all institutions, if we do not clean out those evil people at the top. The good in the force will be set up and killed or driven out like they are doing in the military now.

We live in very dangerous times (and that really includes the good policemen), but most people are clueless.
