The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Not much doing garden wise. I gave the indoor plants a bath in the shower. I have a red marconi pepper ready to pick. The lemon tree has numerous lemons about the size of olives.
I'll be starting some seeds soon for some indoor spinach, lettuce, and herbs.

Got some sweet pea seedlings + bags of seeds at the nursery yesterday. They go in this afternoon or maybe tomorrow here in the Pasadena area, So Cal. It was 81 yesterday and they’ll love it. After Christmas at 4/32 degrees in western Colorado, the sun is so nice.
I’m babysitting and on a tablet now, so I’ll have to post pix later when I get home. It’s cold here today, so I wouldn’t have gotten anything done if I were home.
I want spring!

Oh wow, do you really grow lettuce and spinach indoors...or are you just starting them? I have a grow lamp and would LOVE to know how to grow them inside, if it’s possible.
I am starting over after the “White Fly Episode”
Herbs from seeds.
Also have some pineapples and avocados starting up.

While you are outdoors planting, I’ll be indoors sipping tea, and doing “spring” cleaning. Also gearing up to start canning whatever meats go one sale.
I like to do my canning in the winter as much as possible, since that’s when we can use the extra heat.
You will have spring before we do!LOL
True. I’m going to have the gkids helping this year. Mom has spoken. We shall comply. Daughter wants them taught to garden. I get slave labor.

-3° when I got up this morning. Float valve was frozen in the horse drinker. Had to take the lid off and thaw it out, but before I could get the lid off I had to thaw the latch. This kind of weather makes my bones ache. Seed catalogs came in a flurry the past few days, I must have a dozen now.
I also have an old microwave cart with a 2 foot grow light. The grow light is full spectrum T5 high intensity similar to those sold in many of the seed catalogs(they are cheaper elsewhere-shop around).
I just plant the seeds in some pots and stick them under the grow lights and not too close to the window due to drafts at night, or overheating during the day.
Usually, I cover the pot with a little saran wrap leaving a tiny space for air until they sprout. Then just water as needed. I don't have enough space to grow lettuce for a salad, but I get enough to add a leaf or two to sandwiches, or soup.
Yeh, I had some aphids, and pitched the plants to start over. Seemed to be the best choice.
My slave is too lazy and involved with video stuff. Other than walking and hearing what the various plants are, all I get is attitude.LOL
I know what you mean about the bones. I have that problem too. I also have several rice socks, and bean bag pillows that you heat in the microwave, and put on each bone that hurts-it helps.
Mine aren’t teens yet, and I’m Sgt. Grandpa, so I don’t get attitude. ;)

Mine is practicing to be a teen.LOL I never used to get attitude either, but every one else did. Bad habits are now surfacing here. Seems to be a defensive measure, like a porcupine.
I have twenty cups of different seeds in seed starter under the grow lamp.
I finally got my act together this morning, by separating packets of seeds into the month I plant them, that would be February and March. March 1, is a big bunch of them and I’m counting on no frost after March 1.
I went though all the packets including the ones I’ve planted and marked the month on them when to start the seeds. I was drowning in seed packets until I got them sorted today.
I need to count up the number of containers I will need, if I need more, but that task is difficult as some plants will grow in smaller, shallower containers, and some need larger, deeper containers. That is the next task - to figure that out. I have a stack of the plastic planting bags (look like white grocery bags as brown paper bags look except have drainage holes in the bottom), and that should do for some of these plants.
At some point, fingerling potato slips (if they are called that) will be sent to me.
If March 1st is your “last” frost date, then around 80% of the time it will be.
However just a reminder, sometimes you will get frost or some other problem after that time, so be prepared to protect the plants, and maybe hold back a few under grow lights in case you have to replace them.
