Pink Eye Home Remedy (for my fellow ACA victims)

Posted on 11/17/2013 12:51:10 PM PST by ToastedHead

I used this again this week (with great results) so I want to share, since we're all paying the first $6000 dollars out of pocket now for healthcare.

My little girl came home from school Wed and one of her eyeballs was red. Throughout the evening, it got worse. She started to get the eyeball snots in the inside corner, and along the lower lashline.

I sent Hubby to the store for activated charcoal. This is the exact product he bought at CVS, around 10 bucks. It can be found in the aisle by the Tums and Maalox, because it's marketed as anti-gas.

I boiled a cup of water in the microwave, and then opened three capsules (grab on either side and twist) and dumped them in. Then I poured it through a coffee filter. After it cooled down a bit, I dipped plain old tissues in. I gently wiped both eyes (separate tissues) with enough of the clear black water to get them really wet.

In the morning, her eye was not worse, but still a little pink. I kept her home as a courtesy to the other parents, and I treated her two more times throughout the day.

By Friday morning, she was good to go. No pediatrician required.

You’ve highlighted one of the major problems in healthcare. Probably 30 years ago, a doctor was sued by a person who turned into a Smurf, and now everyone is told “silver is bad”. Even though if I looked into it, silver probably has better antibiotic properties than many antibiotics.

This story is the story of how market based health care delivers exactly the right amount of health care.

Change, ever so slightly, the part of the story where the mother said "I sent Hubby to the store for activated charcoal". In my version, it is a single mother without a clue how to treat her daughter’s eye. In my version, the drug store pharmacy employs a resident Nurse Practitioner who diagnoses the malady and points to the shelf with the charcoal or provides a prescription if the condition is more severe. A $25 transaction at most. No insurance company, no government, and no doctor. Save the doctors for the expensive procedures.

Health care insurance insures one’s net worth against the risk of loss due to health issues. At whatever point in the process of receiving health care delivery you find yourself asking “does the insurance cover it” instead of “how much does it cost” you will experience ever-increasing cost.

WOW! Thanks for the tip. Pink-eye is awful, and this remedy sounds great. Charcoal is a miracle substance - I put it in my cold process soap. It’s my fastest seller! -sorry for the shameless plug-

I ran around doing all the sink handles and toilet bowl handles with Clorox. I can’t believe her little brother didn’t get it too.

I’ve worked in pharmacies that had a Minute Clinic. I’ve noticed the price to walk in has gone up a lot recently. I think its 70 or 80 bucks now for a pink eye situation.

When they first started we all rolled our eyes at the idea, but its turning out to provide a great alternative service.

I didn’t say it poisoned them. I said it kills them.

In the eye drop section, there are eye drops for pink eye.

I looked at your charcoal soap, and I want to try one! Since you ship from Richmond, it’ll get here quick. Love, Chesterfield

I’ve looked at the ingredients in them. At best it helps with symptoms, but I always tell a parent in the middle of the night to save the $12 and get a real treatment.

I don’t know about pink eye, but I discovered something we’ve been trying. It’s called Usnea, and it’s sold in health food stores as a tincture. Basically it is a lichen, soaked in a clear liquor such as rum or vodka. It’s good for upper respiratory ailments, sore throats, uti’s, etc.

Too late:) That was me that just ordered. It’s a great idea! I got two, so I can send one to my brother. He’s had this rosacea thing going on for a while, and since they treat that with antibiotics, I can’t wait to see if it helps him.

I just read a little about Usnea. Never heard of it before. Do you use it every day to prevent colds? They don’t list any drug interactions, but mention liver toxicity in a few places. Be careful if already taking things like statins.

No, thank you! I’m too spastic to make soap. I can barely cook. I’ll let you know how much I like it.

Lol, it’s a good idea. We’ll protest the ACA by taking care of ourselves.
