After 19-year-old Tyler Comstock quarreled with his father and drove off in his truck, the elder Comstock decided to teach him a lesson by reporting the truck to the police as stolen.
Soon after, cops chased down Tyler and shot him to death despite receiving orders from dispatch to cease their pursuit.
On Monday, an argument broke out between Tyler and his father, James Comstock, who refused to buy his son a pack of cigarettes. Tyler stormed off and left in his fathers truck, which is owned by a lawn care company.
Cops pursued Tyler to the nearby Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa. During the chase, Comstock rammed a police vehicle at least once, according to reports.
Still, a recently released audio file revealed that dispatchers twice instructed police to stop following Comstock. The officers did not obey.
The truck eventually came to a stop in the middle of campus property, at which point police ordered Comstock to turn off the engine. Instead, the 19-year-old revved it, prompting Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson to fire six shots into the truck. Two of them hit Comstock, killing him at the scene.

“He didnt start being a fool until the cops put on their sirens”
Try responding to post #93.
“The lawyers wont let you shoot out the tires.”
Yea. Dang it! If the kid had just been a lawyer they could have killed two birds with one stone. So to speak...
Or young and stupid. No drugs were involved with the driver that culminated in my step son’s death. It was traffic warrants.
Dad, you should have let me buy those smokes.
No. Calling the cops was stupid, but this doesn’t mean that bad behavior should be allowed or encouraged.
” He didnt start being a fool until the cops put on their sirens”
And that is the start of a chase?? Really? That is what you are supposed to do when hearing sirens and seeing lights? Run off at high speed?
I believe the law says to pull over and stop. You should read the drivers ed manual sometime.
How is it that cops’ fault for someone starting a chase? Again, the cops are in behind and can’t start a chase. Only the criminal in the lead can start a chase.
If you are stupid enough to start a vehicle chase then you are endangering others using a vehicle and it should be considered a serious crime. The cops should weigh if they need to chase you and determine the likelihood of you stopping your dangerous activity and finding you later. If you are believed to be a danger to others and the likelihood of you not stopping that behavior is high then they have a responsibility to me and everyone else to stop you by any means necessary.
I believe in most chases not being engaged as the perp isnt going anywhere in most cases. However, if you are engaged in a dangerous activity without any external influence then they need to stop you.
That kid ran off. Fine. Give him a head start and see if he stops speeding through lights. If he doesnt, then have another unit intercept him.
Imagine someone getting killed by a high speed driver blowing through stoplights and the cops did not attempt to intervene. People like you would be crying the cops are lazy and not doing their jobs, and suing them for it.
I went back and watched the video and it does appear that he started speeding before the sirens were on. But that doesn’t change any of the other facts; the cops continued the chase even though it endangered innocent lives in the way over a stolen vehicle.
What video were you watching?! He rammed police vehicles at least three times.
Does anyone know the justifiable homicide by police officers rates over the decades?
I don’t yet, but looking at some figures from the 1950s, it sure varies from city to city, which means from one department to another.
Recently, there seems to be a clear increase not in cop killing people in general, but in cops killing people, when they are the ones under attack. “”when the justifiable homicides carried out by law enforcement officers in response to attacks on them are examined, the result is quite different. From 1980 to 1984, the average
number of such homicides was 153, or 39% of the total number. However, for 2004 to 2008, the average number was 255, or 68% of the total””
I have read that white female cops have a higher “stand off and kill” rate than others, we need to make an effort to start putting numbers together so that we can see what the reality is.
“That kid ran off. Fine. Give him a head start and see if he stops speeding through lights. If he doesnt, then have another unit intercept him.”
We’ve come to an agreement on one thing! That would have been a great idea!
This kid was long past any lesson-teaching.
At 19 and acting like this, that horse done ran outta the corral a long, long time ago.
“Dad, you should have let me buy those smokes”
Yep. Another smoking related death. They really ought to outlaw those things. But look at it this way. If he’d actually been able to buy them, and then lit one up, he’d be endangering everyone he encountered with his second hand smoke. Anyone and every one in his (future) path can thank the police for saving them from a possible long and painful death.
If they are indeed under attack and they need to save their life or the lives of others then killing is called for. But too many times it turns out they weren’t really in danger but they shot first before proper assessment. Or sometime it was the cop’s actions that provoked the situation. Then somehow the report comes out that it was justified.
When this was America, many an unruly teenager had an episode of taking Dad’s vehicle for a joy ride. And they’d often wind up getting chased by cops. The part about the teen getting gunned down in cold blood? Well, that’s part of living in the new USSA. (We’re exceptional!)
My uncle once stole my grandfather’s car and wrecked it. Rather than face his Dad, he walked into town, signed up for the Army, and didn’t come home until WWII ended.
I said: Im not the one advocating summary executions by police officers.
You said: Neither did I.
So, let’s look at what you did say:
“The cops killed the jackass after he had endangered others and wasnt stopping.”
“Seems killing the predator was appropriate.”
“With those events in mind, he lost all rights to live IMHO.”
“I believe ALL predators give up their right to live as we have the right to protect ourselves from them and stop them by any means at our disposal.”
I’d say that you have described and advocated what I would call summary execution and you don’t limit it to police officers. If these are not really your opinions, perhaps you ought to clarify.
There is a problem with people expecting government intervention to solve their personal problems.
Don’t feel bad. I can never find things on the FreeRepublic search.
Criminal apologists are morons.
This person was swerving everywhere, running red light intersections and sent his trailer into another car.
This guy was such a risk they had to end him from the looks of it because to just let him go at that moment appeared to be a great big public risk within itself.
Someone said shoot out the tires. That is not easy to do and would be where the public could get killed, so I am not always for shooting out tires either.
It all ended after the truck was stopped in a grassy wooded area with no other people in sight.
