Wondering if anyone knows about home loan/mortgage programs geared to the disabled, and if anyone has ever gotten one based strictly on disability income.
Thanks for any/all info!
They build some really gorgeous manufactured homes built to specifications of site built these days. I have been researching this for a few months now but realize I cannot afford anything more than the park model home. I need land to put it on as well.
I need something smaller to take care of and to clean so that is another reason and then the healthcare issues. I have already got appliances that I purchased when I was still working so don’t need those. And I am not getting any younger so need to start thinking about where I will spend the rest of my life.
Okay, great...thanks for that!
There is another possibility. Look for a small two room cabin someone has had for a summer home and grew tired of. Luxuries are also the first thing a lot of people put on the market cheap to raise money. It would save you some set up cost like power, water, septic, etc.
I could actually pick up some free lots around a lake near here, but the unit I put on them has to be bigger than 450 sq. ft and this little one is 399. You can get permission to put something smaller on it but it’s a rigmarole to do so and you must go thru the HOA, blah, blah, blah. I’d rather not do all that just to be told no. And don’t really want to live in a park anyway. But people are giving their lots away for real cheap and free.
If it works out, it works out. If not, then I will stay where I am...be stretched financially...and keep looking for something to bring in income.
Have been looking daily at Craigslist to see what’s available in land and other small properties. Texas is not big on this type of housing except around the lakes otherwise I’d rent one if I could find a nice one.
Here is the builder I wanted to go with. Very nice and good construction.

“Its part of the normalization of government dependency.”
I didn’t like it much, when I got my draft notice because I had a wife, a baby, and a good job. I was 20 years old.
But when my time was honorably finished, I started back in college using my G.I. Bill, and 3 years later bought a home with my VA insured loan.
The loan was repaid, and my education yielded higher tax revenues, more than repaying the cost to the government of the school assistance.
“So then is your SS retirement going to be an entitlement?”
Of course SS is an entitlement. I’ll never collect on it, so it’s not “mine”. We’re broke, so I’ll not be able to be dependent on any entitlement program.
That’s the danger with government entitlement payment dependency - when we recognize we’re broke, the checks stop. It is a mathematical certainty that they will stop - it’s just the date that is debatable.
You should have a plan “B” for that.
Hey snipe! Hope you’re doing well, buddy.
My mother had a paid-off mobile home and rented a lot. She was working and earning enough to get by. Had no debt.
She suddenly became too ill to work. She was short two weeks of the mandatory 6 months with her employer to get insurance. She tried to make it, but couldn’t.
Broke and literally dying, she called for help. Hubby and I paid for her flight down. She’d lost more than 60 pounds in just a couple of months.
She had to just give away everything. Even though she had it all set up to live on just $800 a month, it was still too much.
She lived. (Turned out she had grave’s disease and liver failure from Tylenol abuse due to an old back injury) It’s been eight years and she’s trying to come back from all that. Right now, she’s still living with family.
It can all go up in smoke so fast.
Please go back to your ivory tower. There a lot of regular hard working people that were dealt a different life’s hand that you were. We don’t want to be where we’re at, believe me. Your condescending views are recognized but not appreciated by the unfortunate ones.
Wow, you are a sourpuss.
Well, good luck to you then...seems you’ll need it more than me thinking like that.
Wow, Marie, I am so sorry to hear about her troubles! I am glad she survived and had people to help her. Some of us are a heartbeat away from being homeless and you never know when or what can happen.
I can stay where I am but have nothing extra unless I find a way to work from home. But I am starting to need some things taken care of health-wise and it would be nice to have a less expensive housing payment and some left over for the medical stuff.
I hope your mom continues to recover and is well enough to strike out on her own again. Maybe a small house like the one I posted would be good for her. A nice idea for someone with money to invest might be to make a small community for those hard up and trying to do better...and either put units in for a rental fee or help them purchase. I could even run it...maybe. :)
Thanks so much for your post.

A few years back I sold manufactured homes. You must realize that the home itself is a low cost, however it is the land preparation that is extremely costly! There are MANY,MANY, permits, water wells, septic tanks, roads, foundations, ect, ect., ect.,. You can always pit the home in a mobil home park but the rent on the space can be expensive and increase on a regular basis! So you will not only be making the home payment with very high interest due to the fact it depreciates in value because it is a manufactured home. You will also be paying space rent, or payment on the loan for the land preparation. Depending on where the land is the cost
of preparing the land due to regulations can be as much as 100,000 dollars be very careful and ask ALL of these questions!
I’m doing pretty good thanks. Just staying busy with Dr appointments mainly and helping keep moms house up. The past year has been kinda hectic for us. In a few months time we found out wife has Asthma and Thyroid Cancer. They started the meds for Asthma that cost us over $200 a month and they took out her Thyroid then did the Iodine treatment. They found it in time so far so goood. Then came a pressure sore on her back we’re still dealing with and just about have it closed we hope. Her Blood Oxygen went too low and a couple other factors caused it. That’s just part of the nature of it though.
When Medicaid was expanded to include those beyond disabled wokers, deceased workers dependent survivors, and poor elderly the cost of the programs sky rocketed. Then came SSI the program where someone who has paid in anything but still gets money. That is true welfare. SSI also started out as a survivors benifit for widows with kids etc and got expanded.
I drew it until my disability was approved which took about nine months counting appeal then I paid all the SSI back with first disability check. They do that automatically.
“Your condescending views are recognized but not appreciated by the unfortunate ones”
Condescending? The Social Security Disability entitlement is as much about government dependency as it is about disability.
So pitying the obvious willing dependency the poster is espousing is condescending? Do you know how loose the definition for “disability” to qualify? We’re not talking catastrophic disability - for whom it is a necessary lifeline. We are talking fraud.
If you can function to the point where you can operate a household - deal with banks and purchase a home, odds are pretty good that you could function in some sort of employment. So I call it like I see it. There is a very good chance the poster - along with most folks on disability these days could function in some sort of job, should they care to get a job. They just don’t want to work for the most part.
So the condescension flows in the other direction. It flows from those who’s sense of entitlement makes them think that somehow they should get an unending cash flow from the taxpayers.
So are you collecting it too? Is that why you have an outsized sense of “gimme, I deserve it”?
“Well, good luck to you then...seems youll need it more than me thinking like that.”
Thanks, but I’ll manage on my own without government dependency, but I’m sure you mean well.
Correct. It’s no more an entitlement check than a retirement account that your employer and you contribute to.
There is a huge difference in being able to care for yourself at home and being able to hold down gainful employment or employment that would not cost more for government than the disability. Most disability back to work rehab programs are nothing but a huge money maker for ones contracted to run the program. Very few actually get a livable job.
First thing is most if not all employers are not thrilled when you can not make it in on bad days or perhaps bad weeks because of your condition. For a person in a wheelchair for example one sore can mean bed rest for several months. For someone with say MS one day they may be able to get up and clean house the next two they may not be able to do hardly anything.
Many persons are also now on disability because they survived either an illness or accident that a few decades ago would have killed them.
You may not believe it because you are only going to believe what your prejudiced mind wants to believe but many likely most persons take disability as a last resort and not a first choice. Some issues can worsen with age or stress. With my disability stress agitates the condition. What kind of stress? Trying to hold a conversation in a room where others are talking, trying to do the grocery shopping, trying to cook, trying to handle two task at once. I can seizure as often as several times a minute. It's not the pass out kind it's severe upper torso spasms. 15 minutes of them and I'm wiped out for the day usually. At home I can control my environment and limit triggers. To do the shopping I can double up on the medicine. I shop late at night.
A few years ago I went to the V.A. Clinic to see their doctor for an Audiology referral as I'm at 50% hearing loss partially service connected and needed hearing aids. BTW for hearing loss that is not a covered medical expense under Soc Sec disability. Many things aren't. The doctor at the clinic looked at my medical history and said "how did you ever get into the armed forces not only once but twice?" I said well my feet dropped a few years ago LOL. I got the hearing aids and seizures increased again. Makes sense.
Many persons who say they are disabled are not actually on Disability. They are on SSI. The qualification standards are lower as is the burden of proof. For that matter when a person becomes disabled it is still two years before they become Medicare eligible.
I used to be able to take a 460 volt three phase motor and in my head could work out how to make a three wire motor run off a six wire motor controller system or vice versa. I had to do it several times on air handling unit motors at work. Now I don't trust myself to change out a blasted light fixture. At work I was screwing up. I'd get home and get in bed. Then I would think did I close this or that valve on the boiler after I blew the tubes. I'd go call the guy on duty and have him check. Several times I did forget and caught myself. Ever been driving down a road you drive every day and suddenly have no idea of where you are, why you are there, how you got there, how long you'd been driving? That was my first symptoms. Sensory Processing Overload. It is one of the conditions that doctors call Panic Disorder. My SSDI falls under General Anxiety Disorder because they needed a name for it the computer recognized.
2 mg a dose of Xanax and I still could not work. No doctor could tell me why it was even happening. They had seen it they knew it could not be cured and in some cases was disabling. At home I can function on half a mg of it every 6-8 hours. Then again sometimes at home I take more it all depends on a lot of things including major weather fronts that mess with my Inner ears.
If you have your health be thankful. If you have the means to cover all bases in case you have a stroke or an uninsured driver hits you going home be thankful. Most workers including engineers under circumstances of say where they are laid off and get sick can find themselves in the same boat.
If you want to discuss privatizing Soc Sec and disability insurance hey I'm all for it. Let's do it. But those who have paid in and filed legitimate medically proven claims should still be honored. Had the programs been left alone to start with and money not stolen for other programs there likely would not be a funding issue. There also needs to be a means where workers who are declared Terminally Ill by two doctors can be instantly placed on disability.
You're a lucky man it seems you and your family have their health. Mister you could loose it all in a matter of days as many before you have found out.
How are you going to do that when you retire?
And did it ever occur to you that not everyone in life has the means or education or anything else to be able to not depend on the money they paid into the system?
It is my money that they took out all those long years in taxes and I fail to see why I cannot use it when I am in need. Now those who come here and never pay into the system and get food stamps and healthcare and all the rest do not deserve it. But like many here have said, I am an American citizen, I have worked for a very long time and paid into the system that was started long before I was even born. I did everything I was supposed to do and now that money can help me when I cannot help myself.
So what is your solution for my problem? Should I be homeless and begging on the street? Should I be a burden to my family? Everyone’s situation and lot in life is different and if you can retire or not get sick and disabled and have to take SS then good for you. But that is not reality for many legitimately disabled US citizens.
If we’d stop giving it to those who did not pay in and have no right to it, it might start serving its true purpose...helping citizens who deserve and need it. So perhaps turn your fury on the illegals and women who bear children just for a welfare check. Or the politicians who continue to give them and give them. Lots of us on FR are disabled thru no fault of our own and do not deserve your pity or scorn. We are doing the best we can in difficult situations.
But I am sure you will not see that and just continue to heap it on me.
