My mother had a paid-off mobile home and rented a lot. She was working and earning enough to get by. Had no debt.

She suddenly became too ill to work. She was short two weeks of the mandatory 6 months with her employer to get insurance. She tried to make it, but couldn’t.

Broke and literally dying, she called for help. Hubby and I paid for her flight down. She’d lost more than 60 pounds in just a couple of months.

She had to just give away everything. Even though she had it all set up to live on just $800 a month, it was still too much.

She lived. (Turned out she had grave’s disease and liver failure from Tylenol abuse due to an old back injury) It’s been eight years and she’s trying to come back from all that. Right now, she’s still living with family.

It can all go up in smoke so fast.

Wow, Marie, I am so sorry to hear about her troubles! I am glad she survived and had people to help her. Some of us are a heartbeat away from being homeless and you never know when or what can happen.

I can stay where I am but have nothing extra unless I find a way to work from home. But I am starting to need some things taken care of health-wise and it would be nice to have a less expensive housing payment and some left over for the medical stuff.

I hope your mom continues to recover and is well enough to strike out on her own again. Maybe a small house like the one I posted would be good for her. A nice idea for someone with money to invest might be to make a small community for those hard up and trying to do better...and either put units in for a rental fee or help them purchase. I could even run it...maybe. :)

Thanks so much for your post.

Yikes hate to hear that. You're right things can go south real fast. Most blue collar workers do not have the protection for it simply because they can't afford it. Then most protection is lifetime cap limited as well still creating a need for the SSDI program.

When Medicaid was expanded to include those beyond disabled wokers, deceased workers dependent survivors, and poor elderly the cost of the programs sky rocketed. Then came SSI the program where someone who has paid in anything but still gets money. That is true welfare. SSI also started out as a survivors benifit for widows with kids etc and got expanded.

I drew it until my disability was approved which took about nine months counting appeal then I paid all the SSI back with first disability check. They do that automatically.
