The Moment a Soccer Crowd Turns a National Anthem SNAFU Into a ‘Chilling’ Example of Patriotism

During Friday’s Sporting KC Major League Soccer game, technical difficulties plagued what was supposed to be a performance by Dr. Cameron Smith. His moment to shine was thwarted by a faulty public address system and two misbehaving microphones. So that’s when the fans in Kansas City decided to step up and deliver a rousing rendition of the song themselves.

The result? As one person who caught it on video put it, “chilling.”

Patriotism is chilling to people who despise the country.

“chilling” means frightening. I think this was probably meant to be “gave me chills” which is entirely different.

Reading some comments about a movie on IMDb a few days ago (don’t remember the movie), one poster wrote that “Patriotism is a disease”. Of course, he was referring to America. The poster seemed to be OK with the nationalism of other people.

I think FReepers who love to bash soccer as a sport would be quite surprised to know how many distinctly patriotic people follow this sport with a passion. At the recent USA national match against Mexico there were many, many Gadsden flags waiving in the stands from the TV shots of the crowd.

Maybe they were singing “Jose, can you see?” but I couldn’t tell.

I know a guy who describes soccer as: “A game for homosexuals who don’t have the hand-eye coordination to play badminton.”

I personally don’t care to every play soccer because it reminds me too much of my high school love life, a lot of running around, a lot of heavy breathing, a lot of sweating, no scoring.

Last home game each season the Cardinals don't have a NA singer, just the crowd.

Nice way to end the regular season; that and the Cubs laying down and giving us the sweep for home field.
