"Miss" America?
newb2012

Posted on 09/18/2013 8:56:08 AM PDT by newb2012

Some stuff still leaves me puzzled here. How can a 'Bollywood 'dance sequence be considered 'Miss.America's' talent? If someone’s born an American and claim to be all American, wouldn’t they have some original American talent to show and win the prestigious Miss.America title? Does a nation have to become so diverse that it'd loose its own identity? The most sad part is the dance number the winner performed - in no way shows how beautiful Indian fine arts are either. I find the performance to be more of mockery of classical form of the art.

I don't honestly think that any girl of non-Indian descent would have been crowned Miss.India in India or for that matter in any other country. Sonia Gandhi is from the Gandhi family which is still India's first family. Gandhi’s family had been loved and kept on high pedestal by the people of India through her fight for independence and thereafter. They celebrated the family's political victories and mourned each time they lost a Gandhi to extremism through generations. And each time they elected someone from the family to succeed their deceased leader. Yet, because of her Italian origins, Sonia Gandhi is taking a back seat when it comes to leading the country unlike any other person from that family. And that decision is expected and respected by the nation and most leaders.

Each country has its own talent and people capable enough to represent and lead the country. It is important for America to remain America and India to remain India. It’d be lovely see people from any country to stand their ground and take pride and humility in what and where they are from and represent their own country in its originality with its strengths and setbacks. We dont want to see ‘Miss. The Most Diverse Nation On The Planet”, but certainly love to see Miss.America without having to miss America.

There’s always going to be cheap labor. Every year a whole bunch more kids turn 18. This cycle has been going on a long time, and your pointless insults won’t change that fact. The more you need ad hominems the more we BOTH know the facts don’t back you.

Doesn’t change anything I said. I know what “layout ground” is, I was born & raised in the Delta. Doesn’t mean the land is there for the taking for anyone who wants it.

Raised in the Delta? Then, you probably know a bit about history: that Irish laborers dug the New Basin Canal in New Orleans, because it was dangerous work and cheaper than risking a valuable slave.

Of course, they immigrated legally. And there was no public assistance, so they had to work (and die, by the thousands) for a living.

Immigrating to the US doesn't mean you have to become a farmer. And willingness to work harder for a dollar is always makes you more valuable. If you find yourself being at risk of being replaced by someone else (younger, from a different city, from a different state, or even from a different country), then you should figure out how to make yourself more valuable.

“There’s always going to be cheap labor. Every year a whole bunch more kids turn 18.”

And every year more of the jobs meant for them go to foreigners. You seen to think that’s the country’s resources are somehow endless.

“The more you need ad hominems the more we BOTH know the facts don’t back you.”

Spare me your tears. You can’t cheer the displacement of your own people & not expect a little flack for it.

...not sure what this has to do with anything but ok.

So basically, you’re in favor of all the immigration we can get no matter how it hurts your own people. No matter if it dilutes your culture, puts your own people out of work or suppresses their wages....I think we’re clear.

Actually the biggest problem 18 year olds face now is automation, their second biggest problem is the group of adults who haven’t moved up the economic food chain (look at all those fast food strikes featuring people in their 30s complaining they can’t live on fast food salary). It’s not about resources, it’s about math. If the result of your labor isn’t at least 5 times as much as your salary you’re on the chopping block, period. Maybe you’ll be replaced by an American, maybe a foreigner, maybe a machine, but you WILL be replaced.

No tears at all. Your need to insult is a CHEER, because it’s you saying I’m right. Flack all you want, I retort with FACT which beats flack every single time.

I'm in favor of legal immigration, for people that want to come to this country and pull their own weight, pay taxes, and make a net contribution to the gross national product.

That's what it was before the War on Poverty made it possible to come to this country illegally and sit on my butt and watch TV in an air-conditioned Section 8 apartment, eating the food that I got with food stamps, and make more babies to increase my subsidy.

In the 1800's, your complaints were made -- almost verbatim -- about the Irish, then the Chinese. Now, this thread started about a woman of East Indian descent winning a beauty pageant. Her father immigrated to the US 30 years ago and is a gynecologist, and she is on track to become a physician herself.

If you feel threatened by this, then you really should look at yourself and your life. Improve yourself so that you don't find yourself competing with the immigrants you consider "below" you.

Hey Progressive....progress.

People come here primarily for freebies today. Its not the 1800s anymore.

I find it interesting that you snipped the majority of my response about exactly that issue.

If your problem is the "freebies", then we are in violent agreement. But, that's not the same as "immigration". The deleterious effects of "freebies" are not limited to immigrants, and I'm not even sure they are the primary recipients -- although certainly so in border areas.

It’s because you lecture about hard work & bettering yourself (which we both agree on) & then cheer when the deck is stacked against people to do just that. “Wanna be a good engineer for a good paycheck? Well go to school & work hard but remember, we’ll bring in 5 more from India so that paycheck will be about 1/2 of what it was before!”

You’re outlook on the world makes no sense & it seems the key ingredient missing is loyalty to your own kind....which I will admit, drives me crazy.

I disagree, it is the same. At one time I would have agreed with you, not anymore. Every person who steps oin this soil gets freebies. I realize we have Americans collecting the same freebies but we’re stuck with them.

For the life if me, In cant understand why you want to import more.

your problem here is you’re a single issue guy. The problem with the freebies is THAT they exist, not who gets them. With or without immigrants the socialism is destroying the country. We could not import another person ever and we’d still have this ridiculous tax bill to pay for all the freebies. And then of course none of any of that has anything to do with the start of the thread, a Miss America winner from America with a successful family that appears to be paying their own bills for the last 30 years.

Sometimes a chick with Indian blood is just a chick with Indian blood and has nothing at all to do with immigration or socialism.

I live in West Texas and it is getting crowded as hell compared to 50 years ago.

I work in the technology industry, for nearly four decades. My career has not been negatively affected by Indian outsourcing, because my job can't be done remotely.

And quite frankly, my job is actually largely fueled by the poor quality of work by outsourcing or H-1B visa employees in the US. They write crappy code, and I show them what kind of problems it is causing, and what they must improve to meet their objectives.

You’re outlook on the world makes no sense & it seems the key ingredient missing is loyalty to your own kind....which I will admit, drives me crazy.

"My own kind" is anyone that wants to come to the US and join us, and contribute. "Your own kind" seems to be someone that matches your skin color... and frankly, that belongs on another website. You should cool it before you get yourself banned.

Anti-immigrant bias is nothing new. It only changes names, and uniforms.

The /s implicit in your remark is understood and makes a point. As I alluded to in a posting upthread with a brief reference to The Godfather, those of Italian descent historically have assimilated to American values and culture, becoming almost hyper-Americans. This article is admittedly long but worth a read. One paragraph is notable with emphasis added:

Assimilation takes place at many different levels, but for the individual, it is likely that few captured the essence of the experience better than Rosa Cavalleri. Cavalleri came from the Italian town of Cuggiono in 1884 as a frightened young woman, joining her husband in a mining camp in remote Missouri. After undergoing numerous tribulations, Cavalleri settled in Chicago, where she cleaned floors and bathrooms, while remarrying and successfully raising a family. As Cavalleri neared death in 1943, she mused: "Only one wish more I have: I'd love to go in Italia again before I die. Now I speak English good like an American I could go anywhere—where millionaires go and high people. I would look the high people in the face and ask them questions I'd like to know. I wouldn't be afraid now—not of anybody.

I'd be proud I come from America and speak English. I would go to Bugiarno [Cuggiono] and see the people and talk to the bosses in the silk factory.... I could talk to the Superiora now. I'd tell her, `Why you were so mean—you threw me out that poor girl whose heart was so kind toward you? You think you'll go to heaven like that?' I'd scold them like that now. I wouldn't be afraid. They wouldn't hurt me now I come from America. Me, that's why I love America. That's what I learned in America: not to be afraid." (Marie Hall Ets, Rosa: The Life of an Italian Immigrant. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1970; p. 254.)
