71 percent of the 2,500 black students in APS who took the Mathematics II exam in 2011, failed and only 1 percent, 25 students, passed with distinction (Pass Plus). By contrast, only 21 percent of white students failed with 79 percent passing and 23 percent of those passing with distinction.
In Fulton County, where 62 percent of black students failed the Mathematics II exam, 90 percent of the white students passed, 32 percent with distinction. The failure rates and achievement gaps throughout most of the school districts in the metro-Atlanta area are astonishing.
The consequence of this reality is that black students are excluded from much of the STEM conversation and are nearly entirely excluded from the higher level STEM education discourse. For the incoming 2013 freshman class of first time full time freshmen at Georgia Tech, for example, there were only 61 applicants from the entire Atlanta Public School system, nearly 2,500 seniors. Of those 61 applicants, 26 were admitted and 15 have enrolled.
Despite APS being 79 percent black students, only 28 percent, or 17 applicants, of the total applicants from APS were black. Of those 17 applicants, only 1 black freshman was admitted.

Those would-be students are dead, either Trayvonned or aborted before they could draw a breath. The federal and blue-state governments have destroyed the black family, thus ending the chances for millions of would-be George Washington Carvers. Instead, feral black youths kill one another and prey on others in an EBT-fueled cycle of violence, all charged to the Federal Reserve’s bottomless credit card.
They didn’t help blacks, but they certainly helped themselves to the public treasury by being very effective race pimps.
That’s what I was thinking. There seems to be a significant difference between American blacks and non-American blacks, such as those from the West Indies or Ethiopia.
I don’t think it’s a black phenomenon, as much as an American black culture phenomenon.

Yes, that is the problem stated far better than what one could infer from my snarky comment. The situation is a shame. Where are the Black leaders??? It is tragic.
These poor achievement numbers in math and science are due to a variety of issues, but absolutely are not due to lack of ability or any problem with or differences in innate intelligence. Many of the brightest people I’ve every known or worked with happen to be black. IMHO, the problem is with culture and what we are emphasizing to our children in our pop culture, and it’s not just affecting blacks. We’ve seen test scores drop in general over the past several decades (e.g. SAT scores). Actually, SAT scores actually track household income, and this is probably due to a greater emphasis on academic achievement in those households.
IQ is also a product of culture and what you are exposed to as a child, as it is very difficult to design IQ tests that don’t in some way reflect what you already know and/or have been exposed to, even if they purport to be designed to do that.

GA Tech isn’t racist. It’s just hard as heck, and as others have noted, answers are right or wrong, and it MATTERS, or bridges fall down, aircraft fall out of the sky, etc.

Race being disproportionate in any endeavor does not automatically mean racism, which is what we’re always told.
And there are some science fields now with more women graduates then men, some with more men. So what? Do the work, get the degree or diploma or not. It’s not this chicks (me) or “societies” fault if you end up doing something else by choice or lack of skill.

If we did not lump Americans by race but by experience we have immigrants, slaves, native Americans and acquisition by conquest/treaty (Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virgin Island, Pacific territories). Most Americans are immigrants. Black immigrants have more in common with whites then blacks descendant from slaves. Make a bet the test scores are different from African black immigrants then American blacks from slaves. Even Caribbean blacks are different in terms of entrepreneur and self sufficiency. Go to their neighborhoods and you will see black owned stores and businesses. Same with Hispanics. Go to neighborhoods of American blacks and no stores except the ones owned by outsiders.
Shocking. Had no idea that there were that many crackers in the Atlanta Public Schools. I thought the ethnic cleansing had been completed years ago.
