One of the leading lights of the science fiction world, editor and author Frederik Pohl, passed away this weekend after a career that defined the genre for decades...

Pohl was known for his mind-bending, often satirical novels (many co-authored with longtime collaborator C.M. Kornbluth), his editing acumen, his science fiction criticism, and his witty, fascinating blog, which he was updating right up until his death...

Sigh. I was recently telling someone about the time I met Isaac Asimov at Lunacon in Tarrytown, NY years ago, and had to explain that Lunacon was more literary than your usual SF con and used to (back in the day) attract the greats of science fiction. I pondered about whether there are any writers of that caliber left. Don’t get me wrong — there are a lot of great writers right now, but it’s different than a generation ago. Those guys are gone. Well, they weren’t all gone ... but there’s one fewer today.

Wish that Seeger wasn’t, the worthless Stalinist stooge.

“America’s best loved commie”, give me a break.

But it’s good to watch GWTW & know that Melanie is still with us.

Pohl was a member of the Communist Party and supported Stalin happily until the Ribbentrop Pact.

Then he stopped paying dues and attending meetings.

Interview in 2010. If I recall Vance was still pissed that Pohl cut all the stuff from the intros to the Demon Princes chapters. You know, back in the mid-60s. Pretty funny. But I am against anything that deprived us of more Vance, so I am 100% with Vance on this one!

RIP FP, RIP JV

I am unfamiliar with Mr. Pohl's work but if you place him with the likes of Heinlein and Asimov then he must have much to offer.

Thank you!

When do you know you are old? When the obituaries start being of interest.

Ouch.

A shame, though I guess not surprising, given his age.

One of my favorite of his novels is “Narabedla, Ltd.” The ending kind of falls apart, but it’s so much fun until then that I didn’t care. ;o)

Frederik Pohl is 93 years old, and apart from a few years in the 1940s, when he was busy defeating Adolf Hitler with the assistance of the U.S. Army Air Force, has been involved in science fiction activities since the age of 11.

Trooper, he posted his last ‘blog entry the day he died, or at least, someone did.

We're not here to debate his politics.

He was a damn fine editor of science fiction.

What does that have to do with his stature as an editor of science fiction?

He was a good science fiction editor, but these days I think that politics counts.
