Farmers to Face Fines or Prison Sentences for Selling Food Directly to Customers
Thomas Dishaw's Govt Slaves ^ | 8-13-2013 | David Gumoert

This would seem to embody the USDA’s advisory, “Know your farmer, know your food,” right? Not exactly. For the USDA and its sister food regulator, the FDA, there’s a problem: many of the farmers are distributing the food via private contracts like herd shares and leasing arrangements, which fall outside the regulatory system of state and local retail licenses and inspections that govern public food sales. In response, federal and state regulators are seeking legal sanctions against farmers in Maine, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and California, among others. These sanctions include injunctions, fines, and even prison sentences.

I'm really not sure about this source; however, with our Big Gov it doesn't seem impossible.

Goodbye roadside veggie and fruit stands. Shellfish sold from the trunks of cars are okay though.

Not sure what this entails but there are farmer’s markets and roadside stands in most states I’d guess.
If this is shutting them down I suspect there will be protest amongst many consumers.

No wonder Calif. is trying to empty their prisons, making room for the farmers!

I am glad to know the FDA and USDA are on the ball.....who knows with their help we might just solve the obesity problem in the USA...’

Regulate the farmers out of business....regulate coal out of business.... We will be doing jumping jacks at night to keep warm and eating warmed over grass clipping...

I’d be in the best shape of my life....

“What about farmers markets and roadside stands?”

A fellow farmer/producer and I were discussing this topic as we tried to sell our produce at the local farmers market this morning. Since the Fed/gov is taking over ‘healthcare’, what is to stop them from attempting to take over the nations food supply? I ask such in a rhetorical sense...

It's coming, complete government control of the entire food distribution chain.

If we can't put a stop to the gov't regulating everything, we will one day soon see an "Affordable Food Act" that will dwarf 0bamacare in scope, cost and intrusion.
Not everyone need health care every day but everyone has to eat.
Control the food; control the people.

Perhaps farmers’ markets are next? In Ohio we already have so many regulations there are few things that can be sold simply. The farmer I buy our meat and eggs from has to jump through so many hoops it’s almost impossible for him to meet all the regs. Then there’s the raw milk issue! I make and can hot pepper mustard, hot pepper relish, jalapeños, and pepperoncini. I have to send these to work with my neighbor to him to illegally sell because cottage food laws in Ohio forbid these items. Jams and jellies are okay, but not these.

Careful reading of the article identifies the real reasons for the charges. First, they are not obtaining licenses which include an initial fee and regular extortion payoffs (inspection fees).

Second, they are selling directly to customers bypassing the government sponsored monopolies. This allows them to sell for a much cheaper price and with much higher quality.

Food safety has nothing to do with it. I will guess that 99.9% of contaminated food is obtained through the government sponsored monopolies rather than direct sales.

Had to click on the link and confirm my suspicions. Their excuse for shutting down private sales is safety - we can't be trusted to buy/sell produce that they haven't inspected.

The gov't feels like it's the only one who can supply food that's plentiful, affordable, and safe - just like health care.

Reality is with this kind of control they can charge what they like, or cut it off completely if you misbehave.
