Having It All Without Having Children
Time ^ | Aug. 12, 2013 | Lauren Sandler

One evening when she was 14 years old, Laura Scott was washing dishes in the kitchen with her mother when she decided she didn't want to have a child. At 26, Scott got married and waited for her mind to change. "It never happened," she says. "And I realized I was going to be fine." Now 50, Scott is more than fine: she's fulfilled. And she's not alone. The birthrate in the U.S. is the lowest in recorded American history. From 2007 to 2011, the most recent year for which there's data, the fertility rate declined 9%. A 2010 Pew Research report showed that childlessness has risen across all racial and ethnic groups, adding up to about 1 in 5 American women who end their childbearing years maternity-free, compared with 1 in 10 in the 1970s.

The DINKs may not be, but the Welfare Queens certainly are.

Even the gimmedat set is aborting their kids like crazy. There's no longer any need for them to have kids to justify receiving welfare of every sort.

It never ceases to amaze how many self described conservatives think they should judge or determine how other people live their lives.

Kinda reminds me of liberals who want to tell others what to eat and drink.

“Political tags — such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth — are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.” ---Robert A. Heinlein

Yeah, well my post was in the context of the TIME cover story and the thread.

As was my reply to your post. You described those on the cover story as "selfish" and I pointed out that someone who is truly selfish is one who takes government handouts that are collected by The State at the point of a gun.

I try to stay on point

Good for you!

I certainly agree with your point. Selfishness has many faces. And even narcissists can have children. Look at Ubama. Of course, Ubama may have agreed to children more for their potential as political props than anything else, and perhaps to provide cover for his ‘down low’ lifestyle.

I’m with you! I’m a 41-year old male and I don’t want kids for the very reasons you listed. In fact, at my age, it’s hard to find women without kids.

It's hard to go wrong with Heinlein. Check this out if you haven't seen it: The "Virgina Edition" of collected works of Robert A. Heinlein. Every single word he ever wrote in a limited edition.

$1500. I'm tempted...

Wow! I’d be tempted, too except I already have most of his books up in the attic. I even still have the original printing of ‘The Past Through Tomorrow’ I got through The Science Fiction Book Club, circa 1967.

I don't have the slightest problem with someone having as my kids as they like.

I can't imagine any circumstance, welfare state or not, where anyone would need your approval. Thus your unsolicited permissiveness is unappreciated.

“And because of women like her we have illegal immigrants flooding into this country doing the work she wouldn’t do.”

No, it’s because we make working stupid unless you make more than $30k per year by making welfare so lucrative!

Seeing the sewer this country was headed for over 50 years ago we make the dicision not to make any offspring of ours have to live through it!

Well, one of my criteria for choosing which candidate earns my vote is their stance on redistribution of income. (I'm against it)

There is a small but measurable chance that my vote will determine which candidate wins office in any given election in which I participate...and that politician just might cast the deciding vote which will prevent someone on government assistance with a gaggle of children from receiving benefits.

See? There's a consequence to my disapproval!

What about nieces and nephews? What about other kids he could have taken under his wing...even as just an advisor, or big brother of sorts. If he’d really had something he wanted passed on, he would have....

Well considering that the marriage rate is falling and the out-of-wedlock birth rate with a great chance for life in poverty

Yeah but this article was aimed at white people. They want the whites to die off while the minorities continue to be dependent on government.

Paying what price, exactly?

For one, the economic penalty. Without a growing society it is impossible to sustain the dependent society. Without a growing dynamic population we do what? Stagnate, shrink? If we do the income and revenue that sustained the growth stops and we endure the penalty. For starters.

Our first foster daughter (age 14 at the time) made it very clear that she wanted to get pregnant as soon as possible so she could collect welfare like her 18 year old sister and live off the government.

3 years later my wife saw her at the local grocery pushing a stroller and buying pampers.

IMNHO this child should never have been raising children.
