The European Union is to ban olive oil jugs and dipping bowls from restaurant tables in a move described by one of Britains top cooks as authoritarian and damaging to artisan food makers.
The small glass jugs filled with green- or gold-colored extra virgin olive oil are familiar and traditional for restaurant goers across Europe, but they will be banned from 1 January 2014 after a decision taken in an obscure Brussels committee earlier this week.
From next year, olive oil presented at a restaurant table must be in prepackaged factory bottles with a tamper-proof dispensing nozzle and labeling in line with EU industrial standards.
The European Commissions justification for the ban, under special Common Agriculture Policy regulations, is hygiene and to protect the image of olive oil with a measure that will benefit struggling industrial producers in Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal.

More “shiny things” to distract the population from the real issues. Just like here in the US. Ain’t socialism great?
Thanks for the tip, I’m part Italian, and I always bought the stuff from the old country. What kind of olive oil brand do you recomend?
Anybody who believes that's the real reason is a moron.
Decadent Europeans LOVE GOVERNMENT and MICROMANAGEMENT and REGULATIONS.
They HATE liberty.
They bleated like sheep and went back to grazing.
The European Commissions justification for the ban, under special Common Agriculture Policy regulations, is "hygiene" and to protect the "image of olive oil" with a measure that will benefit struggling industrial producers in Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal....and will instead result in a benefit to lower-cost producers outside Europe, which is the unwritten intent. What's next, single-serving bottles of wine? That's part of the fight against communicable disease.
FWIW, they’re not banning oil and vinegar on the table - just regulating how it’s presented. Micromanaging bastards.
Some time ago the EU issued a set of regulations specifying the required dimensions, including the angle of curvature,of bananas.
People running the EU are totally nuts, just like the Obama administration in the US! ....England is about to bail out of the EU and other countries there should do so as well, because the EU has failed in so many ways and driven member countries into financial ruin with ridiculous regulations from a bunch of stupid people in Brussels.
One comment: UKIP (look it up).
I bet olive oil somehow offends Muslims.
I’ll leave it to you, because availability of the good stuff really varies by location.

Rule 1: you get what you pay for ! There is no such thing as “a killer deal” on “fresh healthy pure tasty” olive oil. The good stuff costs a LOT more to produce than Wesson!
“What was the reaction of the crowd?”
They bleated like sheep and went back to grazing.
That’s an excellent way to put it. Yep, a very good way to put it.
Now that was funny! Thanks for the laugh!
Thanks! :)
Interesting. Still it had to be voted on originally didn’t it? Seems the evil nature of human kind longs to be slaves.
No, it did not have to be voted on originally. Just like the treaties, all of the other aspects of the EU were pushed on the people by the politicians.
A lot of people in the EU don’t even understand the nature of the central government in Brussels. They’ve been lied to so long that they can’t tell lie from truth.
Not just bananas; many other fruits and vegetables they tried to dictate the size and shape of as well.
Remember the time that they tried to monopolize regional names, e.g. Bordeaux wine, Cheddar cheese and suchlike?
The people get ignored in the EU, rather like what happened in the USSR. The media does not cover it.
Ha ha!
