Its been cloudy most of the day, but the sun is peeking out now and then this afternoon, and the temp is a great 68 degrees. Perfect for being outdoors.
I finally got a few things moved from the seedling area to larger peat pots, and sitting outside on the northerly side of the house. Started some peanuts and melons this week. Sugar Baby Watermelon, and canteloupes Minnesota Midget, Iroquois, and Valencia Winter.
Got the got 14 strawberries planted in urns and hanging baskets. Also started some cucumbers indoors for later transplant. Hubby got the Bantam Corn planted 70 DTM.
The indoor peppers are putting on new peppers like crazy, I am thinking that I may just put them in a slightly larger pot, and see how long they go.
The potatoes finally got here, so will be planting them this weekend, lord willing and it doesn't rain cats and dogs. LOL
Hope all is well with you and your gardens. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
Early blight on the potatoes, probably because they got the molassas/seaweed spray, and the fungi spores stuck. I did get some dime to quarter sized potatoes. Fall crop is my main crop on potatoes. This spring crop is just new taters for fresh use.
I ordered some mushroom spawn. It's time for me to try that and fail several times before I figure that out. I love mushrooms.
Everything else is doing well. The tobacco doesn't have much height to it, but I've got leaves almost as large as 2/3ds of a sheet of paper. I'll be collecting leaves and hanging them in a month or so.

How deep do you guys plant your peppers? I normally plant at the root ball, but I’m wondering if there are any advantages to planting up to the cotyledons. Just curious! The garlic, after what I’m calling the Great Amish Roofing Incident, is growing very well. The onions are getting taller every day, the cabbage and broccoli were put in late but seem to be just fine. I’m using grass clippings instead of dirt for potatoes I’m I’m now thinking the result will be rot. Oh well, I’m glad I experimented and now know better! 25 heirloom tomatoes and 60 hot peppers (pepperoncini, hot banana, cayenne, and jalapeño) will have to wait a week because of a minor cold snap this weekend. Happy gardening!
I was hoping to get to work on my fence this weekend, but that’s not going to happen. I’ve had a tummyache since Monday, but I figured it was just something I ate. Then Wednesday night it got so bad I could hardly breathe, and I ended up in the ER. They ran tests and couldn’t find anything, so they just gave me painkillers and sent me home. I saw my doctor yesterday, and she ordered even more tests, but so far they haven’t turned up anything. I have to load up on ibuprofen just to be able to breathe and move, sleep is miserable no matter what. The ER gave me some stronger stuff but it makes me throw up and doesn’t kill the pain, and that is a very unpleasant combination!!
Add to that, both th ER doc and my doctor said to stick to clear liquids only, so I’m having to stay near a bathroom.
That was my week.
The *&$^%&* dug up a bunch of tomato and spinach plants last week, so I went to the local Dollar Store and bought several 1 bushel laundry baskets. I set them upside down over the plants after putting them back in the dirt. The tomatoes have recovered nicely, the spinach looks iffy. So far, the laundry baskets are doing the job though.
the ducks found a way under the fencing in the hoophouse and seem to like parking under the cauliflower leaves during the day. I was surprised to see a head pop out from under a plant a day ago.
Something decided to eat one of my cucumber plants, so I had to replant another one today. I have tennis ball sized tomatoes on the vines this weekend.
There are also several bunches of smaller tomatoes on other plants. Lettuce and turnips are growing great. Fresh veggies in a few weeks. YUM.
Everythings coming up roses . . . or should I say tomatoes, corn, beans, peppers, cukes, watermelon, etc.
Love, love, love the raised "hay bale bed" ... keep an old shower chair handy to save my aching back.
Got my Armenian Cucumber Seeds today....yippee....Kale and Chard are bolting in the unusual heat for May here in Western Oregon....planted a couple tomato starts...others are just growing their true leaves inside....we don’t get to really start our veggie gardens until June....usually....Roses are starting to bloom ALREADY....we’re kinda having “global warming”....but, I’m sure it is short lived....it will probably rain all of June!
Another little cold spell here, temps to the upper 30’s here tomorrow nite, 3 in. of rain this week, and the farmers are debating corn or rice to plant. The garden is becoming a weedfest, though germination is good on the salad greens and roots.
Mushrooms have been awesome this year though. Found some over 6 in long.
Asparagus is finally coming up; will get a few spears tomorrow. Rhubarb is almost ready to start harvesting. Peas, snap peas; and snow peas have all surfaced.
Since the Fall planted garlic was a bust--only 3 out of 27 cloves planted--I put in 2 more types of garlic, as well as shallots & leek transplants. Then I noticed a 4th errant garlic sprout yesterday, so MAYBE we'll get a few more.
Today, a dozen Brussels sprouts got transplanted; and last week 3 black raspberries went in, as well as 30 strawberries that went into 2 Topsy-Turvy planters.
Still have some new asparagus roots, 2 Nan-King cherries, 3 more black raspberries, and an Elvira grape to plant...plus the warm season seeds. last-frost is normally next week.
Yesterday, I put 30 eggs into the incubator to try again for some chicks. Also last week, both does kindled for a total of 15 bunnies.
Among other work around here, we've added 2 strands of electrified wire to 2 sides the outer 4 ancient strands of barbed perimeter fence around the garden area, giving a protected area of about 2.5 acres; no cattle on the other 2 sides. That area already is cross fenced into 2 areas, with the garden in one of them, with an 8' deer fence around it.
NORTH to top; garden fences in red. The north half has the snap pea field in it, and will also have the sunflowers. The south-east treed area is a mix of apples, lilacs, pines, and junipers. The South side E-W fence is continuous in both directions; it's our south boundary fence. The red diagonal line from the NW corner is a new 4-strand fence I'm working on to keep the cattle out of the 'home area'; all told, it will give us about 10 cattle-free acres.
I’ve been in Chicago all week. I will be very happy to get out of this filthy stinking cement zoo and back to civilization.
Mrs. Augie said it mostly rained all week at home. Good for my potted plants I think because she would have forgotten to water them. LOL
Improving weather is making everything grow well. I can hardly wait for the lilies to bloom.
Just checking in. Glad you are doing well and hope the PT is helping.
I have some good news and bad news. Good news is that I’ve gotten my seedlings into pots and I think most are doing well.
I planted the 2 amaranth seedlings, and I am sorry to report that they both bit the dust. The heavy rain the other day got the first one. Today I went out and the other guy had collapsed, and I don’t know the cause, but he was gone. *sigh*
I sewed a packet of red amaranth seeds from the Heirloom seed company the other day, so we’ll see if they decide to germinate and do things.
I planted marigold seeds harvested from last year’s garden. Western PA getting lots of rain so I hope to see green sprouts soon. Temps in upper 50’s and low 60’s but should warm up by the time the sprouts appear.
