Jets Cut Tim Tebow
NBC ^ | 4/29/13

The Tim Tebow era is over in New York.

The Jets have released Tebow, the New York Post is reporting.

Tebow was widely expected to be on the way out for months, and the only surprise is that the Jets waited until now to do it. The arrival of rookie quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft may have been what it took for the Jets to decide that there was simply no room for Tebow on the roster anymor

That doesn’t make him above average, that makes him on an OK team. Trent Dilfer is generally considered to be the worst QB to ever win a Super Bowl. He went 11-1 on a team that was 5-3 without him and nobody thinks he’s above average. And his career completion percentage is 55.5. If 55.5% isn’t above average 47.9% is DEFINITELY not above average.

You can't judge on one statistic alone. Namath is in the Hall of Fame with a career 50% completion rating.

Let's compare the Steelers and the Broncos for 2011. The Steelers defense only gave up 227 points for the season. The Broncos D gave up 390.

For the playoff game Tebow had 316 yards for 2 TD's and no Int's. He rushed for 50 yards and 1 TD on 10 carries, better than McGahee, a top running back.

Roethlisberger rushed 3 times for 15 yards, and no TD's. He had 289 passing yards with 1 TD and 1 Int, but his completion percentage was 7.4 points higher than Tebow's, which is all you care about.

Tebow outplayed Roethlisberger. He is above average.

That QB rating is pretty interesting, especially the "unmeasureds" by other systems:

+++ He gets the ball in the end zone more often than any QB in football +++ He protects the football better than any QB in football

These, admittedly, are pretty important.

There is a tendency to evaluate QB's strictly by passing completion percentage or total passing yards, but there are many other functions a quarterback needs to perform:

A. Don't fumble, B. Don't get sacked, C. Perform hand-offs cleanly, hopefully with quality misdirection, D. Run well, E. Commmunicate well on the field, F. Manage the clock, G. Recognize defensive changes, H. Audible well, I. Keep teammates focused

I WOULD like to see some other team give him a whirl, just to see what happens.

Actually no you CAN judge on statistics alone. Namath is in the HOF for making the guarantee and backing it up, thus erasing doubts in the merger (which actually very well might have ended due both to lack of competitive balance between the two leagues and financial failure of the first 2 championship games).

1 game does not make a guy above average. And of course you have to remember that 65 yards of that 316 came as YAC on the TD pass.

The simple reality is that Tebow is in the bottom 3rd to bottom 10th in almost every statistic. By the very definition of the words it is impossible for a guy to be below the median in almost every measurable way AND above average.

Namath is in the HOF for making the guarantee and backing it up,

Namath was drunk when he responded to a heckler. No one made a big deal about it until after the game. A game in which the Jets defense made the difference with 4 interceptions. The Jet's Matt Snell rushed for 121 with one TD, and had 40 yards receiving. Then there was Namath with 209 yards passing with no TD's and no turnovers. Not horrible, but not great either.

1 game does not make a guy above average.

I take it that's your way of admitting that Tebow had a very good game. OTOH, you're willing to put Namath in the HOF based on a drunken boast and a mediocre game in which his defense dominated.

By the very definition of the words it is impossible for a guy to be below the median in almost every measurable way AND above average.

The best way is to look at the total win/loss record since you don't want to look at one game. 8 and 5, which is above average by the very definition of the words.

Namath has a lot of issues but the reality remains that it was the first SB to sell out, the first one to draw a major celebrity presence, and the first one to have better TV ratings than the games that lead up to it. And his guarantee is considered to be a large part of that success of the game. And if the game hadn’t been successful there’s a good chance the merger would have been unwound. The guarantee helped cement the modern NFL. And remember, it’s the Hall of FAME not the Hall of STATS.

Tebow had a great second half in that playoff game, and the game winning TD was probably the best pass I ever saw him throw. He stunk up the first half.

8 and 5 isn’t that great a record. And his W-L is his ONLY positive statistic, and given the fact that NFL football has a a53 man roster declaring all the victories to be because of him, especially when in 5 of those victories he completed 10 or fewer passes, is deluded and ridiculous. out here in reality he’s a bad QB, which is why both the GMs that acquired him have been fired, and he doesn’t have a team. Above average QBs don’t get GMs fired and don’t get waived.

Which is your roundabout way of saying I'm right. And we should give Tebow credit for selling tickets and having major networks reschedule his games so they can be shown to a national audience.

Tebow had a great second half in that playoff game, and the game winning TD was probably the best pass I ever saw him throw.

He stunk up the first half.

Denver scored 20 of their 29 points in the first half. And as you can see from Tebow's numbers above, he was the star.

8 and 5 isn’t that great a record.

I said it was an above average record, which it is.

And his W-L is his ONLY positive statistic, and given the fact that NFL football has a a53 man roster declaring all the victories to be because of him, especially when in 5 of those victories he completed 10 or fewer passes, is deluded and ridiculous.

You ignore his phenomenal TD to turnover ratio in those victories as well as his rushing yards which were excellent.

He was a key player in those 8 victories.

Sure give Tebow tons of credit for improving the ratings, but he’s paid to COMPLETE PASSES which is something he does not do.

8 and 5 is usually not good enough to get in the playoffs. He got lucky being in a terrible division that allowed 8-8 to win it.

He TD to turnover ratio isn’t very good. 17-9 (his career stat, not his cherry picked winning steak stat) is worse than 2:1, that’s bottom 3rd of the league like most of his stats. The problem with his rushing yards is as a QB he’s paid to COMPLETE PASSES. If the best thing you can say about a QB is that he runs well he’s below average, and should consider switching position. Which is really what he should be doing, he should go to RB with the occasional gadget play throw. Those stats for an RB would make him one of the most dynamic and exciting players in the history of the position. his stats for a QB are pathetic, bottom of the league, 3rd on the depth chart out on waivers.

Quarterbacks are paid to lead their teams to victory. They do that by advancing the ball, scoring, and ball control. I listed the stats of the victories to make the point that when Tebow did those things well, his team won. When he didn't do them well, the team lost. Thanks for helping make that point.

Tebow performed well more often than he didn't. That makes him above average.

A QB that finishes a game with 10 or fewer receptions (as Tebow has done in over half his starts, did NOT advance the ball. And his 17 TDs countered by 9 INTs and 7 fumbles shows he’s a failure at scoring and ball control also.

What you studiously ignore is that in those vaunted “wins” of his you keep pointing to with monotony is that he DIDN’T do those things well in many of those games. Let’s look at those games http://www.nfl.com/player/timtebow/497135/gamelogs?season=2011 :
Dolphins game 13 completions, 48%, sacked 6 times, fumbled once, 220 TOTAL yds offense (pass and run). Not much advancing the ball there, nor ball control.
Raiders game, 10 completions, 47.6%, 242 total yards. Again crap for advancing and scoring.
Chiefs game, 2 completions, 25%, 112 total yards. And that’s the Chiefs game he WON. then there’s the rematch at the end of the year: 6 completions, 27%, 76 total yards, 1 INT 1 FMB. Those 2 games combined still make a crappy stat line for one game.

And it goes on and on. Even that “mighty” playoff win: 10 completions, 47.6%. That’s the best game of his career and he was still pathetic.

No Tebow did NOT perform more often than he didn’t. He stank and won anyway. He is NOT above average. If he was above average he’d be on a team now. If he was above average he wouldn’t have been 3rd on the depth chart with both his teams, if he was above average he would complete more than 10 passes EVERY game. He sucks. The fact that you can’t see that is sad for you, but reality is reality even no matter how hard you stick your fingers in your ear and yell “LALALALALA”.

We’re done here, your insistence he doesn’t stink is sad. Spew another wad on your screen if you feel you must but I won’t be reading it, I’ve grown weary watching you pleasure yourself.

Like I said, when Tebow didn't play well they lost, and when he did play well, which included his rushing yards, they won.

We’re done here, your insistence he doesn’t stink is sad. Spew another wad on your screen if you feel you must but I won’t be reading it, I’ve grown weary watching you pleasure yourself.

Which is your way of admitting you've lost.

Bye.
