Advice on Brit detective series....

Posted on 04/26/2013 8:49:59 PM PDT by Mountain Mary

Okay, I'm normally a political and news poster..but am searching for some new BBC shows to addict myself to post Downton Abbey. Hoping Freepers can help. There was a thread about this a while back.

After realizing that the Brits are light years better than us for turning out watchable, absorbing and well acted, directed and produced "who dunnits", and as I am on a political sabbatical for obvious reasons..

Here's my completed viewing list over the last three months: 1. Prime Suspect: Helen Mirren 2. Foley's War: all except the new ones that aren't out yet. 3. George Gently...Seasons 1-4.

I am currently addicted to the latter, especially seeing as Lee Ingleby as Sargeant John Bacchus is the best(and yummiest) actor EVER...and the chemistry between him and Martin Shaw as DCI Gently is priceless. Similar is interaction between Michael Kitchen as DCI Christopher Foley and his driver, Sam Stuart played by Honeysuckle Weeks in Foyle's War.

Well good. Also try Masterpiece Theater to see what’s in the offering.

Spoiler LL? Really. You would have to have been living under a rock not to know how D.A’s Season Three ended with Matthew’s demise.

Sky Dancer has had great comments during this fun discussion about good Brit shows. Why in the world would you want to make it into anything else?

Yes, I do watch Masterpiece, SD.
Selfridge isn’t doin’ it for me..but it looks like it might get better.
Jeremy Piven is miscast, IMO.

La Lady has been sending harassing emails. Next one gets copied with all the rest and forwarded under the personal attacks section.

Here in Australia I constantly have to check up on some of the shows at home that I miss and people do write to tell me endings which I appreciate.

But yeah, it's all over the internet re:DA and as you say, you'd have to be living under a rock. If she has the time to come to FR she surely has the time to check on her shows.

Now as to Dancing With The Stars, people let me know who's safe and who's not.

Thank you so much! I’m always on the lookout for good authors writing about that time period; I’ll be checking out the library for those authors.

I like the actors in it. Story line, meh .... I’ve read his biography and it follows pretty close except for (ain’t gonna tell, you know, just in case) but in places the writer has taken poetic license. Could tell you how it ends but won’t. :D

If you haven't visited the Fantastic Fiction website yet, you might want to check it out. It provides an alphabetical listing of authors, plus the ability to search author names and book titles. They also show recently released, and upcoming book releases. Individual author pages list their books by series, in chronological order. It's a good place to keep track of your favorite authors, the books they've written, and any upcoming publications. At the bottom of each author page is a list of similar authors you might be interested in. Here's the link:

I was hoping it would be released on “streaming.”

Again, thank you so much!!! That website will make checking for new books so much easier than the torturous “search” function our library system uses. I just peeked at FF and found two new books by favorite authors of mine. I’m putting them “on hold” forthwith!

Welcome to the club genre... Foyle’s War is a great start. Another recommendation in the pre-WW2 era are all the Poirot episodes. Modern day selections I've enjoyed are Case Histories and Inspector Lewis. You can get some of these off youtube and rent others via Amazon.

Thanks for posting this thread..I saved it for future reference. Thanks to all who gave suggestions

PS
Isn’t a spoiler someone who tells the ending before the show airs in all time zones the day of the show’s airing?

I wasn’t surprised! Matthew, aka Dan Stevens, made his intended departure from Downton Abbey known publicly way before the end of Season 3. It’s the best PBS series I’ve ever seen. The quality of the show is in the acting, period details, story line and much more.

The Brits see it before we do so lots of potential for “spoilers” which will probably happen again.

Thanks MEG33. I’m saving it too and am so excited about having some new shows to watch in future.

Can you tell me how to reply to “ALL”, like you did?

DWTS is really boring this season(IMO). It’s SOOO easy to see who will be eliminated each week. And the fans are keeping really bad dancers in it like Andy Dick because they like him. It’s going to come down to Sendaya vs. Kellie Pickler. DUH. I’ll probably tune in at the end.
