Another vote for “MI-5”

Very well done but I couldn't hack the American anti-abortion bad guys in one episode.

Yes... if you just ignore the anti-US bias, it's a good show with some quite unpredictable twists in it.

I also liked the “Zen” show, but the BBC canceled it after three episodes.

I can’t believe no one mentioned Ripper Street!

Also, for something that reminds me of Northern Exposure, try Hamish MacBeth.

Midsomer Murders, New Tricks, Dalziel and Pasco, Vera (so-so), Inspector Morse, Murdoch Mysteries (BBC, but a Canadian inspector circa 1900), Inspector Lewis, The Last Detective, UK Law and Order

The Duchess of Duke Street is what I’ve been watching. It is not a detective series, and made in the 70’s, but certainly entertaining. I have one series in my queue called New Tricks, looks interesting... There’s also Monarch of the Glen, Lark Rise to Candleford; I have not seen these two yet, but look forward to it. Try Garrow’s Law, that was interesting. Cranford and Return to Cranford were good, Judi Dench is in these two.

A touch if frost. It was an itv series so you won’t have heard of it via the BBC.

I guess that “Rumpole of the Bailey” doesn't quite fit your definition of “who dunnits” in that most of the stories don't involve murder and sometimes the bad one gets away and an innocent gets convicted.

LOM was one of the best shows made in a long time. Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt was to me the best part. Same with Ashes To Ashes.

Another one found on Netflix was The Last Detective starring Peter Davidson (5th Doctor) as Dangerous (because he wasn’t)Davies as the last detective wanted on a case. At times I could related to the character a lot.

MI-5 is not to be missed

You want dark, raw and gritty? MI-5 has it all.

If you want dark, try to find “DCI Banks.” Several years ago there was a great Brit detective series called “Midsomer Murders.” Also, a truly excellent Brit series, police procedural, was called “Life on Mars.” From years back, there was a one-off BBC drama called “A Dark Adapted Eye” that was very fine.

You like medieval mysteries? I've got a couple you might enjoy, Company of Liars and The Owl Killers, by Karen Maitland. Both historically accurate and very, very good books.

Nice spoiler for people who are still catching up. Really. Way to ruin it for others.

I really enjoyed the Dangerous Davies series of whodunits. I have never seen the film of the same name but the series is a keeper and needs to be watched in consecutive order.

If you like Downtown abbey you most likely would enjoy UPSTAIRS Downstairs from the Beeb during the seventies. I think it would age well.

“Life on Mars”

Did you also watch Ashes to Ashes, a continuation of the series? All I watch are British productions.

DCI Banks, MI5, Campion, The Last Detective, Wire in the Blood, A touch of Evil, Whitechapel, Above Suspicion, Inspector Lewis, Blue Murder, The Commander, Midsomer Murders, Inspector Linley....

I have been watching them on Amazon Instant Video. I could watch FREE with Amazon Prime but lately they have been messing around with what is free and what costs $4.99 an episode so now I am watching on Netflix. Never watch US tv anymore...garbage.
