My new AMERICAN-MADE Laptop Computer
Self | 13 April 2013 | Self

Posted on 04/12/2013 3:08:16 PM PDT by Lexinom

I've received my Lotus Solstice-15 with upgraded 1080p display.

These are built in the USA by a small company in Orlanda called LotusPC.

I negotiated a fair deal and received one-on-one help from the owner of the company. He built the machine to our exact specifications, including the absence of an installed OS (for which we were not charged).

This PC is of high-quality, on the order of a Panasonic laptop, in the $800-$1000 range. It's extremely solidly built with keypresses not moving the adjacent keys, has a keypad, and even the base i5 CPU screams. Running Ubuntu 12.10.

It is still possible to obtain a great U.S.-assembled laptop.

Note your comment...this is an ASSEMBLED product not a built product. All those chips and boards as well as the LCD panel came from abroad.

Just looked at their website. The company I work for dropped over $6K for the laptop I have (have to run some pretty hefty stuff) and these guys have a completely superior machine for $2K less.

Yep, from all over the place including China.

I really like Lotus PC and am glad to have them in our corner.

Every little bit helps. According to their site the support and warranty are great.

One detail I particularly appreciate is the design of the power jack: it has, on the female side, five radially-distributed tabs around the perimeter.

It’s true, they do. But the design was most likely from a U.S engineer, R&D and NRE funded by an U.S company and the EPA gets completely bypassed cause their made in another country. That’s what makes them cheap.

There's no way around it. We simply don't make this stuff over here anymore.

Best part is they let you upgrade to Win7 Pro as an OS instead of that crappy win8.

I can’t believe there are so many on this thread so quick to believe Integrated Circuit chips are no longer made in the US.

That will come as a bit of a surprise to the folks over at Intel. And TI. And ON. And Freescale (Oh, I bet you never heard of them. Used to be this tiny little outfit named "Motorola"). Intel has the fab in AZ. TI in TX. ON in AZ. Freescale in AZ and TX (OK, FSL had a fab in Sendai Japan, but we know how that turned out).

Then there's Silicon Valley....

(Gotta at least try, nascar.)

***I live in SV. NONE of this stuff gets made here in the USA.

So they closed the last fab there? Sorry. I guess it’s all design centers generating the traffic on the freeways. So, since it’s dead, I assume the property is cheap again. Where’s it good to buy?

IOW, what are we making to justify SV if nothing’s “made” there anymore?
