NFL owners have passed a player safety rule barring ball carriers from using the crown of their helmets to make contact with a defender in the open field.
Several coaches and team executives expressed concern about officiating the new rule, but Commissioner Roger Goodell championed it and it passed Wednesday as the owners meetings concluded.

I hope you are right, if only to hold back the wave that wants desperately to turn every little American boy into a eunuch.

I bet he does, the little rotten effeminate dink with his pinky finger hanging out every time he takes a sip.

Remember Techmo Bowl on NES ?
Hmm, I wonder if folks will “wake up” now that the bread and circuses are going to be affected.
Jim Brown is also a racist moron. Pardon me for not looking to him for legitimacy.
In other news, the Super Bowl will have all the latest pop stars and the game winner will be determined by the coin toss.
There was a quirk in the replay review rules that said if a coach threw a challenge flag on a play that he was not allowed to call for a review (specifically: turnovers and scoring plays), then the officials would penalize the coach (or the coach would burn a timeout) and they would be prohibited from performing the normally-mandatory review.
I think they’re keeping the penalty, but changing the rule so that the mandated review still occurs. I’d call it a technical correction, not a significant change.
Cost the Lions a game.
I don’t see what all the fuss about the helmet rule is about. If leading with the crown of the helmet is wrong, then it’s wrong for everyone. Why should the ball carrier be exempted?
Hence the need to correct the rule.
I don’t think there is any way to not lead with the head unless you slide or turn your head to the side in the attempt to hit with only your shoulder, which seems to me like an increased likelihood of breaking your neck. Rather than stop injury this stupid rule will probably be the thing that really does get someone killed on the field. Just another unintended consequence of liberalism and the wimpification of America.
Good post and you are exactly right on both counts.
NFL’s new national song is Tiny Tim”s version of “Tip Toe Through the Tulips”
It’s no different than looking to Emmitt Smith for legitimacy. The fact is runningbacks didn’t used to use their heads as battering rams, it’s a practice that’s gotten more popular as flags on the defense have become more prevalent when there’s helmet to helmet contact. Now the RBs get to stop ducking into tackles trying to draw that penalty. The rules committee said their reviewed all the week 16 games and this rule only would have been called 5 times, so the idea that this will destroy the game is laughable.
I don’t get all the consternation about this rule. I was ALWAYS taught to keep my head up learning to play football in Ohio. In fact, if I remember correctly, it was a personal foul to hit with the crown of the helmet back when I was playing high school ball, at least in open field.
Of course, I’ve noticed that they don’t seem to teach proper fundamentals anymore, so maybe that’s the problem. Watching what seems to pass for open field tackling or ball carrying anymore, I guess I can see why a lot of NFL players are going to have difficulty adjusting.
If you have to lower your head to make a tackle or cover the ball, you’re doing it wrong.
The media and lawyers should all wear dresses.
