This has all the makings of a tempest in a Nutella jar, which may not be as appealing as a Nutella milkshake, Nutella fudge or Nutella-stuffed French toast. Or stolen Nutella, which, apparently, has mouthwatering appeal at Columbia University.
Last month one of Columbia’s undergraduate dining halls began serving Nutella every day, not just in crepes on weekends. For the uninitiated, Nutella is a creamier-than-peanut-butter, chocolate hazelnut spread from Italy that a college student might eat a whole jar of in a single sitting when the pressure is on.
The problem was that the Columbia students went through jars and jars of Nutella — at least 100 pounds a day, according to a freshman member of the Columbia College Student Council who had urged the university’s Dining Services operation to provide it in the first place. Apparently they were not just eating it in the dining hall. They were spiriting it away in soup containers and other receptacles, to be eaten later.
For Dining Services, the unexpected demand was an unexpected expense. And before you could say chocolate-covered Nutella marshmallow cookies, the council member, Peter Bailinson, heard from Vicki Dunn, the executive director of Dining Services. The subject was how much Nutella students were taking back to their dorms, or wherever they were taking it, and how much all that Nutella was costing.
“People take silverware, cups and plates, and that adds up over the course of a year to a lot of money,” he said. “With Nutella, it added up much more quickly. Where Dining might have to spend $50,000 to replace silverware and cups, they were spending thousands of dollars on Nutella in one week.”

As I’m sure you know, filberts are hazelnuts. Also known as cobnuts FWIW.
I haven’t tried the JIF yet...nor will I, actually...Nutella is fantastic. I don’t eat it for breakfast..I use it as “frosting” on graham crackers or cupcakes.
I WAS going to say that chocolate wasn’t on my breakfast menu except for “milk”...but then I remembered that I have a box of Chocolate Pop-Tarts in the cupboard.

Yep. If they want to know whose stealing the stuff and taking it back to their dorms just look for the kids that are starting to get fatter because that stuff is very fattening but damn is it good...lol

I do like genuine hazelnut flavored coffee with cream and sugar.
But now even the hazelnut syrup is artificially flavored?
Is nothing sacred?
Is everything becoming Unobtainium?

It is nothing but a candy bar in a jar. If you left stacks of hershey bars out for the students to take as they wanted, the same expense would occur.

Compared to Marmite or Vegemite, Nutella is Ambrosia!
In Vietnam when we would come out of the bush for a few weeks rest at a firebase, the messhalls had the same problem.
All the peanut butter, jam, hot sauce, etc would disappear from the tables.
Kinda like army ants came through & picked the place clean.
I suspect an advertising agency behind this news release.
Last night (March 7th) it took up valuable time on Fox News’s broadcast (the Grapevine). Also in this New York Times article. Both of these news organizations (and no doubt others) just happened to think that undergraduates pilfering Nutella was major breaking news??
Also sketchy from the article:

So, last month they start serving it (beyond just in weekend crepes), and in four to six weeks they (a) incur thousands of dollars in costs PER WEEK because of their new decision, (b) do nothing about it, and (c) inform major news organizations.
OK.
And the fact that I have started to see Nutella commercials on TV this year, after a lifetime of seeing no advertising whatsoever for it, is a mere coincidence, I suppose. (How many Nutella commercials from your childhood can you remember?)
It's about like a dark chocolate frosting, but not nearly as sweet. Good on a cracker.
