After winning approval from the necessary authorities, the two men received lethal injections at a Belgian hospital in December. Dufour described their last moments: "They had a last cup of coffee and everything was fine. They said goodbye to their parents and brother and all was serene. They waved and that was that." Under a 2002 law, Belgians are allowed to end their own lives if a doctor judges an individual has made his or her wishes clear and is suffering unbearable pain. The case of the twins was unusual because the two men were not approaching the end of their natural lives nor were they terminally ill.

The below quote came from http://www.expatica.com
"You can be assured of the highest-quality medical care in Belgium, regarded as among the best healthcare systems in Europe."
LOL
They chose it. Not the government. Government should stay out of everything involving your life. I wouldn’t chose this but at least they were not forced by the government. Less government the better.
Wow. What a sad decision they made. It’s a heartbreaking story.
>>They chose it. Not the government. <<
Get ready for the “slippery slope” folks to stop by shortly.
The decision to end one’s life is between an individual and his/her God. The government does not belong in the discussion, much less busybodies.
possibly....but it is FAR more likely that they were assisted in their decision by "counseling" from the state, and maybe relatives if they had assets.
Ridiculous. They chose it. Period. Their choice. Their life. Total freedom.
I don’t object to people killing themselves although I would try to talk them out of it. I object to a doctor killing them or to their government going on record that it might be a good idea.
Yeah, but there is a large segment of FReepers that believe government, courts, the church, or society should have a say in an individual's "end of life" decision. So much for individual rights...
Let’s remember that the Belgian socialized medicine system would not have paid for ANY of the complications from blindness and deafness that either of these men could have had under a private insurance plan. Certainly a terrible situation whatever way you look at it.
Easily said. However, they were both deaf, and becoming blind. Exactly how would you continue with any type of communication with them, if they had lived ?
I can only imagine it would be like being in an isolation chamber for the rest of your life.
Most people go nuts if they spend more than an hour in an isolation chamber.
>>I respectfully disagree with your analysis. We are the stewards of our earthly lives, not the masters. It is a short step from the so-called “right to die” to an imposed duty to die. <<
Slippery slope AND interference with a man’s right to decide on his life based on himself and his God.
A two-fer.
What’s even more disturbing is the Netherlands roving deathmobiles story linked at the bottom. http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/03/01/10556325-netherlands-dispatches-mobile-euthanasia-units
I’m going to defend the 2n Amendment even if it means I’ll die.
What does that make me? Does that make me suicidal? Does this give me control over my life versus karma? Or is this God’s plan that I do this so others may decide differently?
Helen Keller’s improbable journey from a child unable to communicate due to her multiple disabilities, to her exalted place on the world stage as the famous global citizen she would become, is one of the greatest stories of the 20th century.

Fact is, probably none of us know what it would be like to grow up deaf your whole life, and then face the prospect of losing your sight too. I think I would never do this, but I can’t say that I know so.
Well, now they can see and now they can hear.
They can see the flames and they can hear the gnashing of teeth and the wailing moans of despair.
IN HELL.
Helen Keller. Braille. Touch. A trial run with blindfolds. Maybe I couldn’t talk them out of it, but I would try.
I agree with everything you said, but I do not think tax dollars (Belgians have socialized healthcare) should be spent on euthanasia.
No, that does not make you suicidal, it makes you brave for standing up for your personal beliefs in the face of adversity.
