The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association reached agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement early Sunday morning.
After a marathon 16-plus hour negotiating session at the Sofitel Hotel that began Saturday afternoon, the sides announced an agreement in principle shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday.
The League did not announce the start date of the season or the number of games each team will play. Those details will be announced soon.
The deal, agreed to at approximately 4:40 a.m., was announced jointly by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr in the same hotel conference room where the negotiations were conducted with the assistance of Scot Beckenbaugh, Deputy Director for Mediation Services for the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

Finally.
It’s about damn time. Hockey players for the most part aren’t divas, and just want to get on the ice and play.
I played the game from Jr. High to 38 and loved it, but I will not return to the arena this year.
At some point in time, the people who really pay the bills and I don’t mean team owners, I mean the fans and taxpayers need to grow a pair and say, you’re not that fricken important and we are not going to pay good money for a shortened season.
Unfortunately, I will be in the minority and the owners and players will never get the message.
I miss NHL hockey, but frankly I am still pissed at all these clowns. Might be one lock-out too many for some fans.
It’s not a marathon now, it’s a sprint ... no taking “days off” this year.
With each team having 4 Division opponents & 10 other Conference, they should play 24 division games + 20 conference == 44 regular season; no extra playoffs, and rank ALL teams by points despite division finish.
Too late. I have moved on.
Maybe next year. Im on strike this year.
Word is, they’re looking at 48 games ... add a home & home with the other divisions placing, e.g. North 3rd vs other 3rd’s.
Also, now that the NHL is back, we will lose our goalie here in Hershey (Braden Holtby) and he's the only thing keeping the Bears anywhere near being in contention.
Worse, this is the second time that the NHL has had a "shortened" season. This also happened back in the 1994-95 season where they played a 15-week season and virtually all teams were in contention for the playoffs in the final week - which means that a mediocre team has potential to go on a hot streak and win the Stanley Cup as a fluke - tainting the achievement. This is why we need a full season. In a full season, the mediocre teams are usually out of contention by mid-February.
I anxiously look forward to the nhl season all summer.
They disappointed me big time.
They are dead to me. 2nd time for this bull$#1t
None of that is really very different from a normal hockey season. It already has a very high percentage of teams getting into the playoffs every year, and given the frequency with which President’s Trophy winners lose in the first round. Given the fact that over half the league is in the playoffs mediocre teams are generally in contention all the way into the first round. It’s not as bad as it used to be, I remember when all but 5 teams made the playoffs and an 11 games under 500 Toronto Maple Leafs made the playoffs, and that was a full 82 game season.
But the playoffs always weed out the chaff, regardless of how they did in the regular season it’s still a challenge to win 16 out of 28 with a compressed schedule. Nobody wins The Cup as a fluke, they often get to the playoffs on a fluke, they might even get past the first round on a fluke. But putting together the full 16 requires more than a fluke.
So for particular teams they are all going to be home games? Or did you mean home and away?
...unless of course people stop watching, driving TV ratings in the toilet.
The average cable/dish subscriber is paying 40%-50% of their bill to sports networks(ESPN,FOX(local),others).
Example: "Dodgers, Fox Sports talking $6-billion TV deal..."
Yet another reason to dump the dumbing down, propaganda machine that is today's media.
Home & home refers to back-to-back games between two teams, each of which gets home ice advantage. It is a typical shorthand, but you are right from one team’s perspective it is a home & away or an away & home.
Thu: Toronto at Boston
Sat: Boston at Toronto
That said, I'll be back. The NHL doesn't owe me anything but a good product on the ice in exchange for my ticket purchase.
LOL, that’s what I meant...
(Buffalo being a border town, maybe it’s a Canadianism? ;-)
