A military bomb disposal team took care of some unfinished World War II business in eastern England after a boy found an old bomb, officials said.
Sonny Carter, 7, was using a metal detector he got for Christmas during a walk with his parents Wednesday, the Lynn News reported. He got a hit on Roydon Common near the family's home in Gaywood, Norfolk.
The family brought the mud-caked object home and washed it off. Then Sonny's father, Jem Carter, got concerned and called a friend who had been a Royal Air Force armorer, who told him to call police.
An RAF bomb disposal team determined the bomb was a British practice weapon used on training runs. It still had its wiring in place but contained no explosives.
The family found the experience more exciting than scary.
"We are dumbfounded that he discovered this on his first go," Sonny's mother, Tracy Wood, told the News. "We are going to go out again to see if he can find something Roman. It has made our Christmas."
But Flight Lt. Donald Earl, a spokesman for RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire, advised anyone who finds a possible bomb to leave it be and call for help.
What an exciting find for the kid! A story he can tell his grandchildren. Cool!

Ducking and covering now
That will be a while. For now he can tell his schoolmates.
And look, kids, I've got all my fingers, and most of my toes.
Probably best to leave the large metal objects alone for Lefty and his buddies. They ain't too bright, and do a good job of securing a site.

They of course, back off. Kid nailed me on that and said I used the same line with her and her sister when she was a bratling.
Didn't deny that charge. Just asked which one made the final cut? ;)

Have a friend who lost a leg to unexploded ordinance.
I guess it didn’t help that he tried to open it with a saw.
Ever body knows you use a tub of gas and a roman candle.
Been detecting for 20 years and never found anything that exciting unless you consider pull tabs and zinc pennies fun.
Will Brian Ash please pick up the red courtesy phone. Leftenant Brian Ash ...
When I was a twelve year old Army brat living in Okinawa in the sixties, I once found a real bomb from WWII. The little brothers ratted me out, and Dad called the bomb disposal squad. They told him it was still live, and quite deadly.
Lets all PANIC!
As a WW2 history aficionado, that is one of my favorites. Hats off to those Royal Engineer chappies! Also to the inspiration of this, Major A. B. Hartley, M.B.E, RE, and his memoir, “Unexploded Bomb”.
Is that a bomb,or are you just happy to see me?
Hand salute and all due respects. No one around here knows what an MBE is, or an Iron Cross, or a Red Star (Hero of the Soviet Union), or that ribbon they give you for not getting arrested in the last 3 years. Good Conduct, I think they call it. I've got two. Amazing, that part.
No-one reads Kipling anymore.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
Me? I live it. Dance?
