Despite their overwhelming popularity, assault weapons like the rifle used by the Sandy Hook Elementary killer are very rarely used in crimes, according to a comprehensive Congressional Research Service report on guns and gun control legislation.
Citing a survey of 203,300 state and federal prisoners who were armed during the crime for which they were incarcerated, "fewer than 1 in 50, or less than 2 percent, used, carried, or possessed a semiautomatic assault weapon," said the report.
The weapons, however, are at the center of President Obama's bid to put in place new gun control rules following the Connecticut killings last week. His effort, backed by gun-control Democrats, is expected to lead to a new proposal to ban the weapons and also crack down on gun sales throughout the nation.

To put this in perspective, out of the total 12,664 reported murders in 2011, 2,912 were a result of a cutting/stabbing implement, a blunt trauma implement, or from hands and feet. 23% of all murders didn't even involve a gun and you were 18 times more likely to be stabbed, bludgeoned, or beaten to death than shot with an assault rifle.
The FBI does not make public data regarding the number of people killed by illegal aliens every year but we can be sure it's more than 161.5. Just sayin'.

That’s, about, the same percentage that, actually, PRACTICES gay marriage.
I suspect it’s much less than 1.8%. Assault rifles aren’t nearly as common as all other types of rifles. They’re estimated to be approx. 1% of all the rifles in the country.
Yeah! Those Amish robbers at the local Quickie Marts ALWAYs jam up in there with their Assault Weapons turned sideways (one-handed) yelling “Gimme yo effing money, sucka!”
Thanks to Obama, Cuomo, Feinstein, Lieberman, et al, the sales of AR-type weapons are skyrocketing. I suspect all the manufacturers are gearing up for multiple shift production.
Hi Gaffer.
I wish you were right about manufacturers increasing production. A local FFl gun shop owner (when I saw his threadbare racks) told me that guns are still being shipped, but production is ending because of fear of certain ones being prohibited. If they are, the companies will have many in progress that they will have to eat, since they will not be able to sell them legally. I suppose that they can always issue them to illegals when they come across the border. W/sarc

I ordered an AR15 on wednesday without issue. I might have to call the manufacturer and inquire into getting another one.
I think there’s probably a lot more assault rifles out there than that. Even at 1% of all firearms, that’s only around 2 million assault rifles. I suspect there’s actually 10-20 million of them out there, perhaps more.
I've seen suggestions only; that it was used in the shootings and/or that it was in the trunk of his car...
Seems to me that the two 9mm would have been used and the .223 left behind.
As for Colt, and their AR platforms, they make and sell quite a lot for the military and LE. It is still possible to buy their LE versions in semi-auto, I think. The point is that any weapon they can't sell to civilians could be stocked over for LEO or military sales with a change or two.
I can't say anything for the importers of the WASRs, etc. They could be cut off in a hurry, but would later adapt with cut of bayo lugs, more American parts, funky stocks or the like = just like last time.
In the end, they'll try a magazine size limit and a guillotining of a symbolic “Assault Rifle” My guess it'll be the one that was used in the school shootings, and they will shout the victory to the heavens and proclaim that school massacres are vanquished.

Congrats! I hope you get it soon (Before Christmas). If you call manufacturer directly, please let us know if my info was correct. I have a client that would like to have a couple to shoot the wild pigs that are on his land. I’ve offered him my two ARs in the past, but of course I lost them, and all my firearms, in a boating accident last month.
I wouldn’t mind picking up a few for me to give to Christmas gifts for special clients.

I’m pretty sure there were two ARs involved, one he used, one left in the trunk.
There is a crying need for a real news organization to assemble “known knowns” on this story since the early reporting was so inaccurate. Unfortunately we are pretty short on real news organizations in this country.
It is a sad thing.
But you have to remember also rifles sold between 1994 and 2004 are not assault weapons so you can’t count them. :)
reputable news organizations are still perpetuating the falsehood that Lanza was wearing body armor. He wasn’t. they’re still claiming that Holmes was wearing body armor in Aurora too. He wasn’t either. They have an agenda. the deception is intentional. It disgusts me that I know the names of these two piles of feces.
School shootings are far from over. There will be another one. No I’m not planning it, nor have any direct knowledge of such a plot. What I do have is an appreciation for the situation. There are firearms in America, lots of them - roughly 300 million. There is nothing that will change that short of the second coming. There is evil and insanity in America. Again, nothing you, me, or any other mortal does will change that. No school system can afford to completely secure their facilities. Besides, such a fortified bunker would be detrimental to the mission of education. Given these three inescapable facts there will be more shootings. What really {expletives} me off is that almost no one is talking about doing anything even remotely effective towards stopping that or reducing the risk. Instead there is an all too familiar effort afoot to subvert the very principles this country was founded upon. All to advance their unamerican political agenda. The cold hard truth is, if you can’t prevent these kinds of events, then the best you can do is end them quickly. That means firearms in our schools, in the hands of trusted and trained individuals. No more gun free zones - they aren’t. Stop denying people three means to protect themselves.
Unless I hit you the rifle itself, it’s the bullet that commits the assault. I guess that’s too much logic for the liberal mind though.
