A new carnivore shaped like a candelabra has been spotted in deep ocean waters off California's Monterey Bay. The meat-eating species was dubbed the "harp sponge," so-called because its structure resembles a harp or lyre turned on its side.
A team from the Monterey Bay Research Aquarium Institute in Moss Landing, Calif., discovered the sponge in 2000 while exploring with a remotely operated vehicle. The sponges live nearly 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) beneath the ocean's surface.
"We were just amazed. No one had ever seen this animal with their own eyes before," said Lonny Lundsten, an invertebrate biologist at the research institute and one of the first to see the harp sponge

A WEIRD MEAT EATING SPONGE FOUND IN THE OCEAN....WAIT A MINUTE for a second there I thought you were talking about the president...
Perfect! She’s a sponge alright.
The report of this meat-eating sponge reveals a number of overlooked traits in the jaw and teeth that clearly and specifically link the sponge to the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In the case of the deep-sea, meat-eating sponge, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals.
The report is more fully covered in the book, Man and Sponge at Yale by Brigham Indie Shreeves.
You laugh, but watch me do it!!!
