Of course, I don't realistically think that Texas will actually secede, but I had to laugh when I saw that this petition has started and I'm curious to see how many people sign it. Just imagine if Texas did become its own country and conservatives could find refuge there. One of the things I find so frustrating is that there is literally NOWHERE in the world that offers freedom from Big Government anymore. I don't want to live in a theocracy. I don't want to live in a nanny state. I want to live somewhere that people can be free to live as they please and just leave be left alone. Liberals have always had the option of immigrating to Canada or Europe if they crave big government (even though, of course, a lot of the ones who threatened to leave when Bush won never did follow through - they *could* have left if it was really that bad here under Bush). There isn't anywhere for conservatives to go if we don't like the way this country is going.

I really think that both sides would be happier if conservatives did have a place to go where we could be left alone and could simply stay out of liberals' attempts at social engineering through big government. Let them create their big govt programs AND pay the bill for them.

The dominoes would start falling towards an avalanche of states and people who don’t want anything to do with this federal govt. We could call ours the New States of America and they could call theirs New Africa.

I don’t suppose 40% of New Jersey would be allowed to go . . .

So let’s get it going. Let’s start a peaceful movement to have the Red areas secede from the Blue areas. Let’s do it. It’s like we’re in a bad marriage. Nobody wants it, but they stay in it out of fear and a misguided sense of duty. The fact is that we conservatives simply don’t have enough in common with the liberals to successfully share a polity with them. We’ll all be better off if we divide the United States along red-blue lines. Look at the county-by-county electoral map for this last election. It’s really quite stark. We conservatives would get most of it. And we’d run up against “red” areas in Canada. What’s more, we’d be shut of the deep-blue areas like Detroit, CT, VT, etc. We’d never have to hear from Bill Maher, Michael Moore or Barney Frank every again. And they wouldn’t have to deal with us. Let’s do it.

Texas is asking Obama to allow it to leave the Union?

Did the Colonists ask King George III to allow them to separate from England?

Just do it. I'm for it 100%.

Don’t ask permission. Just do it if you’re doing it.

TIMELINE:
Texas announces it is seceding from the USA

US announces that the states cannot secede and declares it will intercede to stop the process

LA announces it is joining TX

US establishes a land, sea and air blockade of TX and LA and threatens to use deadly force to back it up

OK announces it is joining TX and LA

TX “nationalizes” all US property and resources inside the TX border, including military bases and installations. (there are some minor firefights, but nothing serious)

TX has the military capability to stand off the US forces, specially when a lot of them will be reluctant to fire on TX citizens. (there are a lot of big Army and Air Force bases inside TX with a lot of Texans involved - any military personnel wishing to stay loyal to the US would be escorted to the border)

KS, NE, MS and AL announce they are joining the states leaving the US

TX declares all US agreements that involve TX resources null and void and announces the intention to re-negotiate any deals or treaties.

US backs down on the land and air components of the blockade, but makes it difficult and expensive to get into or out of TX and confiscates shipments and imprisons TX residents who leave TX.

TX retaliates in kind.

Border skirmishes break out and lives are lost, but nothing serious is accomplished in terms of military objectives.

TX must break the naval blockade to restore oil shipments. TX Air Natl Guard (now TX Air Force) planes attack US Navy ships in the Gulf of Mexico, lose several planes, but sink several ships. The blockade is fractured but not destroyed. (if only TX had a couple of good submarines)

ND, SD, AR, MO, KY announce they are joining the states leaving the US

US threatens to bomb the oil refineries at Galveston and Houston if the attacks continue.

TX threatens to escalate to using nukes if US bombs TX resources. (note that TX has the only nuclear weapon assembly plant in the US)

GA, SC, WV, WY, MT, ID, UT, AK announce they are joining the states leaving the US

At this point, the military blustering cools off somewhat and the conflict turns into primarily an economic standoff. TX needs the shipping lanes open. US needs TX oil. (there are many other resources involved too, but these are the primary ones)

TX is nearly self-sufficient by itself and if other states are included, the group can become self-sufficient, but without oil sales outside the borders, their economy suffers greatly. US economy is also crippled without TX oil, grain from KS and NE and other resources, but can continue.

If TX has to go this path alone, it may not work, but if other states join in, there is a tipping point where the US cannot effectively enforce an embargo across too many borders and too many miles and needs to sue for peace. US could allow the secession and negotiate deals and treaties with the new country, or offer concessions to get TX and the others to stay within the Union. Political upheaval inside the US could force the second option.

I wish we would! Of course, when all the libs in their toilet states see how much better and prosperous Texas is, they will migrate here for a better life...and trot out all their retarded, failed ideology. Forget that! Texas had better build that mythical fence we keeping hearing about...and it had better encircle the ENTIRE state. FReepers welcome (well, some of you, anyway).

Here would be my ideas of some things that should be in place:
1) No statewide government welfare of any kind provided. Would be a disincentive for lazy liberals or illegals to move here. With very low taxes and a great business environment, and a strong base of Christians, the poor could be helped in a way that is on a smaller, more personal scale and that holds them accountable to quickly get back to work.Should be mostly church or private charity based. Individual cities or counties could come up with their own systems (work fare or something) if they wish, but there would be no statewide “program” of benefits . This would allow different cities to try different things but not burden the rest of the state if their ideas are impractical or if they run up debt. They would have to bear the consequences of their local decisions, no bailouts from the state level.

2)Dismantle public education in favor of vouchers, charter schools, etc.Clean out the university system and all teacher training colleges. (You really don’t need teacher training colleges for elementary and middle school - if students are taught very well and are self governed themselves, they should be capable of teaching younger kids basic math, English, etc by the time they are 19. See Laura Ingalls Wilder books) Think through ways of promoting higher education but eliminating the socialist indoctrination going on. If not, the infection of those ideas continues.
Mandatory courses on constitutional government and historical foundations of government should be required.

3) I agree with the previous poster who said there needs to be some requirements on the right to vote. Either proof that you worked or own a business, or possibly if you take any locally provided welfare you are not allowed to vote for 5 years, something like that. Also strict voter registration, voter ID required, stiff penalties for vote fraud, etc.

Scotland is considering this over in the old country....why not here?

I envision the other red states would follow quickly along with the red areas of the blue states.

it could happen.

“Of course, I don’t realistically think that Texas will actually secede,...”

Why? Buncha guys in white wigs with British accents didn’t think it was impossible way back when. King Oba- er, excuse me, King George didn’t like the idea, but that did not stop them, thank God.

Texas does not need permisson to leave the union....she was a Republic and wilfully joined the union. I do believe that Texas is the only state that can do that.

All Texans have to do to "secede" from the Union is the following imo. They have to do Fox News' job, since Fox isn't doing it, which is the following. Texans need to make a lot of noise to reconnect citizens with Congress's constitutional Article I, Section 8 limited powers, along with raising awareness of Chief Justice Marshall's official clarification of Congress's limited power to lay taxes with respect to those powers.
"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." --Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
