You can guess that we didn’t get anything here on the river. Glad you are out from under the slush now.

We just got our power back on here in Norwalk, CT, thanks to the mercy of God and the skilled and tireless workers of Hydro Quebec (who worked on our local problems) and countless others who came from far and wide. We have seen crews from Texas, Minnesota, Quebec, Florida. These folks are great. If you are a lineman - Thank You. If you know a lineman - thank them. They really are a big part of the line that divides society from anarchy.

Great post! Thank you for telling us about it. Agree with you about the linemen.

My dad was a lineman for 17 years. He followed tornadoes around in west Texas and remember him climbing poles on Christmas eve in northern New Mexico in 15 degree blowing snow. They are a special breed. Thanks for the reminder. Glad you’ve got power back on. ;o)

Went to NJ to deliver gas to folks - had to jury-rig some old glass water bottles to pour from “approved” containers. Took a tour of Keyport, NJ - Ye Cottage Inn (establishee 1906) completely gutted. Boats all over the marinas, on the sides of roads, amazing how far they traveled.

Heat is still an issue - some have gas, but “safety features” prevent ovens from being lit by hand.

Gas lines were incredible - besides car lines of 2-3 hours, people lining up 20 or so deep holding gas cans.

No power yet for many. Prayers up.

Next time going to get ton of Ds. There is a battery store on Route 10 in Roxbury. I bought a ton. The Walmart by me just opened and a frenzy broke out when the pallet of 5 lb gas containers came out. Really hoping for Obama defeat, weak Nor’Easter, and that the riots won’t be too bad.

Get yourself a solar battery charger. I have one that charges multiple sizes. Then buy a few packs of rechargeable batteries in multiple sizes. The one I bought was like $20. I keep it on the deck out back and charge batteries regularly. Then you don’t have to store a bunch of batteries and rotate them out when they expire before you use them.

“Sucks” is putting it mildly I suppose...

Building near the waterfront seems ridiculous in the face of storms like this last one, but I suppose people will take that chance over and over again.

Me, well...I’m perfectly content living well away from the coast and on higher ground.

Wishing them well...

Thanks for the thread. My last contact w/ the outside world was on Wednesday. I’m now in town hall, which opened today for recharging and internet access.

We still have nothing. I finally saw LIPA in my neighborhood today. We still have no electric, cable, internet or heat. Thank goodness the hot water is heated by gas.

I’m on the verge of breaking, but the Good Lord has blessed me w/ wonderful landlords and neighbors. They have a gas stove so we can at least cook and eat what ever is starting to defrost. One neighbor had 5 households over twice now for a huge dinner of food, LOTS of wine and good company. For a few hours, we can laugh and just forget about the destruction around us.

Then it’s the walk back in total darkness w/ our flash lights. Thank goodness my landlords are also positive people.I think they’re worried about me, lol.

The house is still intact. We had 3 huge trees come down. The 1st one took us out at 3:30 pm Monday. So “we” decided to take out the entire neighborhood w/ the 2 other trees, lol.

Enough of my complaining. From the little info I can gather from my battery charged radio, I heard entire towns were washed out. I heard about 1 neighborhood in Queens that burned to the ground. I hear Fire Island is gone.

Is any of this true? I could have picked up a paper, but I didn’t feel like spending my lessening cash base to be lied to.

Any missing FReepers? What is going on here? No one talks about Long Island, everything is about NJ and the city.

Oh, I’m on the North Shore of Long Island, Suffolk County. I think they forgot about us.

The gas lines are just like the Carter years.

It’s good to hear from you. You’re welcome for the thread. It’s literally the least I can do. I wish I could do more. Here’s some news about Long Island.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/11/03/sandy-long-island-power-recovery/1679309/

9:03AM EST November 4. 2012 - MATTITUCK, N.Y. — On hurricane-swept Long Island Saturday, there were two Federal Emergency Management stations, five Red Cross food stations, dozens of recharge-your-phone stations and, at long last, stations offering the very next kind of comfort on many a Sandy-survivor’s list — free hot showers.

Shower havens were open at multiple locations with locker rooms, from an aquatic center to a golf course club house. BYO towel and soap.

There have been six deaths attributed to the storm and the dangers in its aftermath on Long Island’s 118-mile stretch from the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens east to the celebrity beach hamlets of the Hamptons.

Nassau County executive Edward Mangano, said the county of 1.3 million residents was rife with uninhabited homes, cell outages and damaged infrastructure including a damaged sewer system serving 500,000 residents with daunting health consequences.

Four of the confirmed storm-related deaths were in Nassau County including a drowning in Island Park, a fallen tree fatality, a car accident in Garden City at an intersection without functioning lights and one fatality from an individual using a propane grill indoors who died of carbon monoxide poisoning. There are also four unconfirmed deaths awaiting a coroner’s report, Mangano said.

Mangano praised President Obama, who called twice with promises to supply information and outreach needed from FEMA, and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who supplied additional state police. Mangano said the governor also pledged to hold the Long Island Power Authority accountable for leaving hundreds of thousands of people still in the dark.

By Saturday afternoon, the Authority announced it had restored power to more than 600,000 customers, with approximately 450,000 (including nearly 300,000 in Nassau County) still without power. Nassau, with 1.3 million residents, and Suffolk, with nearly 1.5 million, cover most of Long Island’s length.

While 90% of customers are likely to have power back by the end of Wednesday, the authority said it may take another week to restore power in Brookville, St. James and Port Jefferson. “There are up to 100,000 customers from the most severely flooded areas whose homes and businesses may currently be unable to receive power,” the Authority’s web site says.

The Long Island Railroad was partially in operation by Saturday. The Metropolitan Transit Authority had restored hourly service from Penn Station to the railroad’s four largest branches: Port Washington, Ronkonkoma, Babylon and Huntington.

Thanks (((tom)))! In town hall. They opened up for charging and internet access. Cell phones work off and on. Texting seems to be the best bet. Calling is still nearly impossible, depending on the area.

The electric finally came up @ work on Sat afternoon. We were running on generator, but still no internet there.

I’m very disorientated. The guy here in town hall saw i was on the verge of breaking down so he put me in a “private” room, w/ a few others and I just started crying, He was kind and gave me tissues.

I just keep breaking down, feeling like I am just about to fall of a cliff.

It’s 55 in my apt, but my 2 kitties keep me nice and warm. been sleeping on the couch, near the front door so I can hear anyone trying to break in.
