Drug 'may prevent stroke damage'

It may be possible to use a drug to prevent some of the lasting and crippling damage caused by a stroke, according to doctors in the US and Canada.

A safety trial, published in the Lancet Neurology medical journal, suggested the chemical NA-1 was safe to use.

The study on 185 people also hinted that patients given the drug developed fewer regions of damaged brain tissue.

The Stroke Association said that it was promising, but needed more research.

Tests in primates had suggested NA-1 prevented brain cells dying when a stroke starved them of oxygen.

Well, Obama’s medical advisory board would never approve such a drug which could prolong the lives of senior citizens, so don’t count on it being approved here.

Regular use of Hydergine can lessen the effects of oxygen starvation in the event of a stroke or drowning. Google it, it’s a fascinating drug.

Having a brother in law who recently had a major stroke which damaged a good part of his brain, I find this very interesting and am hopeful it turns out to be what they think it will. The family is worried about a subsequent stroke which could incapacitate my BIL completely. The stroke happened in April and he has recently begun to walk after months of relearning. He also suffered some loss of cognitive function which is proving to be harder to regain. Anything that could potentially help stroke patients is a good thing.

Early Aspirin Provides Quick Benefits For Acute Stroke Patients

But why use a cheap, generic drug when you can use and expensive patented drug instead?

Careful there . . .aspirin is a blood thinner which may help break up a clot causing the stroke. However, not all strokes are caused by clots. If the stroke is caused by an aneurism (weakening of blood vessel/bubble ready to burst) or other malady - the damage could be far worse.

Re: Aspirin. I think the mechanism of action is different. NA-1 acts at the post-synaptic level whereas aspirin affects platelet aggregation. The choice of drug depends upon your individual circumstances. The study involved endovascular aneurysm repair eval post op.

Re: Reid and Biden: Did you ever in your wildest nightmares dream that those two would have influence on the direction of our country? Who needs illegal drugs—just read the news and get a weird sense of unreality. (I think I hijacked a thread I started lol!)

I believe you’re correct. There are ischemic strokes (lack of oxygen/circulation to the neurons) and hemorrhagic strokes (escape of blood from vessels into surrounding tissues thus causing mechanical compression in a restricted compartment [skull]).
