(snip) ... Similar dating advice can be found in arcane classics like Advice to a Young Wife from an Old Mistress and the more recent Secrets About Men from the Mayflower Madam (who trained her girls in deportment and other finishing-school finer points).
Advice like: Dont act like a slut (in public). Listen. Be gracious and grateful.
And dont talk too much.

In the July 4 Daily Mail, Sarah Bridge asks, Are women like me too critical to attract a man?
Heres an excerpt:
Single at the age of 39, Ive often wondered why none of my relationships lasted the distance, but had always put it down to luck and timing ....Your problem is that youre really snippy, he said.
Snippy? I asked, not entirely sure what he meant.
Yes, snippy, he said. Abrupt. Critical. If someone says or does something wrong, then youre onto it straight away. Men will ignore a lot of things if they fancy someone a weird dress sense, or taking hours getting ready to go out but they hate being put down or made to feel small. You can be funny, but sometimes its way too close for comfort.
Now, should you read the original piece online, which includes two photos of the writer, you may have other ideas about why Bridge remains unattached.

May you find the neurotic, extremely talkative Mr. Mom of your dreams.
Yes, I know all about it, as I was a full-time mother who had to go out to work when mine were in grade school. I stayed with teaching so that I would be home when they were home.
It disgusts me to see the way men are treated, and I have railed for years about the way that men are portrayed in commercials. I have contacted companies on several occasions to give them a hard time for depicting men as idiots.
The latest was about a year or so ago. I contacted whoever it is that makes Yoplait yogurt — I think that was the one. They had a TV commercial in which a woman spoke to her husband as if he was a child. Annoyed me to no end.
Thanks for the good wishes.
But I do hope you find a good woman. Talkative or not.
Well, what with all the critical evaluation of males it seems rather obvious that you’re unhappy and looking around. Maybe you should work on that, for the sake of your “man.”
I had an observation on some of those marriages where chatterboxing is an issue.
No, I'm not looking around or unhappy.
Again, I hope you end up with a good woman.
Guys, those of you who have a Lady who wants to communicate, thank God for her and cherish her attention and presence. ... Speaking from experience, guys.
Yep....LOL
What a nice thing to say.
Ex was from six years ago. Still a dear friend. New wife and i expecting a baby in two months. And thanks!
I’ve been practically mute since September due to a vocal nerve issue. What I’ve noticed is that most people, men and women both, are terrified of silence. If I’m in a room with only one other person, that person will talk their head off trying to fill the void. Even people who are usually quiet. God forbid it should ever be quiet enough to think for very long.
If there’s more than one other person, it’s less noticable since they’ll be talking to each other. But I’ve noticed that even then they’ll do anything to prevent lapses in the converation from turning into quiet stretches. They’ll turn on the TV, start meowing at the cat, sing to themselves, whatever.
LOL...that is so, so very good!
Lucky guy.
You get more grief for not taking enough!
Shiite! I want your job..
I guess we will continue to have different perspectives.
Cheers
Speak for yourself.
I have a great job-was just promoted (by female manager over other female coworkers ), great life, very active with multiple hobbies ,great girlfriend who makes twice what I make and I will probably never make what she does and she is extremely educated and incredibly smart. She has never made me feel inferior..actually quite the opposite...we are very best friends besides lovers
Strong insecurity in your post.
He brings them in - starts doing some paperwork (of which he has plenty) they have nothing to do BUT talk - and talk they do - to their ultimate downfall.
But I guess a prison term is better than enduring that gadawful silence!/s
I never said that men should be more like women.
That is your perspective of the words you used.
Not everyone has the same viewpoint.
I understand you are not trying to feminize men. I disagree in that seems to be meaning from my viewpoint.
I cannot imagine what words I used that indicated that men should be more like women.
Could you tell me what words I used that made you think that was my meaning?
Let us just put it down to differences. I misunderstood.
