I’ve been practically mute since September due to a vocal nerve issue. What I’ve noticed is that most people, men and women both, are terrified of silence. If I’m in a room with only one other person, that person will talk their head off trying to fill the void. Even people who are usually quiet. God forbid it should ever be quiet enough to think for very long.

If there’s more than one other person, it’s less noticable since they’ll be talking to each other. But I’ve noticed that even then they’ll do anything to prevent lapses in the converation from turning into quiet stretches. They’ll turn on the TV, start meowing at the cat, sing to themselves, whatever.

In an amazing video “Never talk to the Police” on youtube a Police interrogator said he uses the “terrified of silence” phenomena to get subjects to talk.

He brings them in - starts doing some paperwork (of which he has plenty) they have nothing to do BUT talk - and talk they do - to their ultimate downfall.

But I guess a prison term is better than enduring that gadawful silence!/s
