I have a friend from Holland (Netherlands).. he showed me (never seen before) pictures of his grandfather (that was an SS), BUT he is really reluctant to show them because he doesn't want a bad image on his family (name)..
Same here, my family was here from the start, 2nd LT in the revolutionary war and documentation shows the later family also owned slaves, me I am a slave to the goverment, but I never owned anyone nore do I want to.
CRAP!!! Now he’s not even talking to me!!! thanks to all of you ignorant jerks.. (I DID see the pics) :/
I’ve known hm 3 years.. took me a LONG time to get him to be willing to release the pics :/
fine.. I go silent on FR again.. jerks
(not all of you.. just the ones that WERE jerks :p)
I’ll call his bluff. That doesn’t look like an SS uniform, either German or Dutch. If Dutch, where is the ‘Wolf’s Hook’ rune? Tell him to come across with a picture of a recognizable SS uniform and the purported division.
My father and his brother were in the Dutch Underground. The GESTAPO was about to hang him, his brother and another uncle because of a hidden radio. Some how his brother talked the GESTAPO out of that action since VE Day was just a few days away. FYI, his brother escaped from a work camp somewhere close to Hannover. His job was collecting scrap from the German citizenry. He spoke German fluently. Because he was allowed some freedom at the railroad station, he made contact with a Dutch engineer who smuggled him back to Holland in the coal car. At his funeral about 10-20 fellow Dutch Underground survivors showed up....it was right out of To Catch a Thief.
Actually, he is a soldier. A troop is a group of soldiers, usually in cavalry or armoured units.
I apologise in advance for my tendency to pick at nits ....
See Post 43.
I stepped away. Sorry for the delay — I was being sarcastic and just havin’ fun.
Wow. I apologize.
We are just having fun while we wait for him to post the pictures. None of us meant any harm, or offense.
The CONSENSUS (as far as I can tell) is that we ALL would be honored to have these previously unseen rare photos appear here on FR.
I was talking to him when I read the earlier post about the pic NOT being SS... he said that was an early pic, before he qwas ‘Promoted’... but, he just now said that his g-father Never killed and Jews.. not what to make of that, nor whether is G-father would admit to it... I am just happy he is talking to me again..
Took me many years to get him to go this far.. I lost him in about 45 seconds because of comments here... I encouraged him that most people here are interested in history.. and would not hate him because of something that happened 70 years ago. First thing he said when I was able to get him to talk again.. ,”they hate me”... :/
He can always post them anonymously, under a one time nome de net.
(You might let him know that nully worked with a former Hitler Youth, building parts for cruise missiles...)
He couldn't be more wrong.
The picture is not of an SS man.
Also, his grandfather was a handsome fellow.
Got any pictures of him? I had two uncles who were in the U.S. Army in WWII. My one uncle was from Canada, and my other uncle was from Holland. My great-uncle from Canada was killed in France towards the end of WWI. He's buried in a British Military Cemetery there. My brother was in the U.S. Army, and served in Vietnam '66-67. My 5th great-grandfather was a Lieut. in the Duchess County (NY) Militia, and is listed as a Patriot in the D.A.R. Patriot Index.
Please read all comments before posting....
American historical and familial entanglements can get even more interesting than that. A lot of blacks in this country have ancestors who were white slave owners. In fact, most do. It's hard to find any American blacks who have pure African ancestry.
In my own (black) family, we have an ancestor who was a Brigadier General for the Confederate Army. His father wrote the Crittenden Compromise (an act which would have allowed slavery in certain American states).
That said, I don't condemn my own forefathers for being men of their times, and don't feel the slightest bit of shame about their historical legacies.
Bikkuri, let your friend know that we Americans don't condemn the sons for the sins of their father.
Great pic!
Historically important for the uniform at the time.
I apologize if any of my remarks offended him.
I was trying to use humor, and used to some of the back and forth taunting we do while on threads. Perhaps we made it hard for him (by having too much) when he has difficulty with English.
I don’t think anyone was being a jerk, or trying to be. And I read all the comments. Always do.
I do see how someone not real familiar with the language might take offense. Ask him to give it a second chance.
Actually, I would still recommend you get the photo url’s (if you can get his permission) and put them in a new THREAD. That way he can join in on discussion, and reveal whatever details he wants, or not, as he feels more comfortable.
IMHO, starting this thread, and not putting the pictures, and introducing a mystery guest, led to some of the divergent comments. You offered something (WWII pics), then told us you didn’t actually have them. I think you should shoulder some of the blame, don’t you?
All these comments about Grandfathers are making me feel old. My Grandfather was in the Spanish-American War. Nobody knows any more if he ever left Florida.
***I hate people who despise other nationalities and the Dutch!***
But then, they share a border with the Belgians!
