I have to say, Im disappointed and a little concerned by the reaction of some of my freeper friends to the Sandusky / Penn State scandal. Full disclosure: I graduated from PSU in 1970. Am not a member of the Alumni Association, have been back for, maybe, 5 games since 1970. Very much on the periphery of all things Penn State.
For the class of 70, the JoPa phenomenon (JoPa hadnt even been coined, yet.) hadnt materialized. Nevertheless, living in Pennsylvania, one could hardly be oblivious to the success of the football team or Paternos philosophy. We were happy to see someone who was not only successful, but successful with honor and class.
And this is what brings me to this vanity. So many of you seem to resent that very notion. You apparently held so much animus toward Paterno BEFORE ANY OF THIS EVER CAME OUT, that the very second it hit the fan you couldnt wait to jump on the down-with-Joe bandwagon. Some of you exhibit so much glee at Joes downfall that you come very close to behaving as you accuse him a willingness to throw a few boys under the bus if it can bring down JoPa & Penn State. Why do you take such joy in seeing a mans lifework GOOD work - destroyed?
That Joe couldnt, perhaps, live up to the ideals he espoused doesnt make the message any less worthwhile nor does it repudiate the good that he did do. In every sense, his life is the classic story of a Greek tragedy something the Brown English major would understand!
And to those of you who are so cock-sure of how you would react in any given situation, it is with trepidation that I say: I hope you get the chance to find out.

Of all the ridiculous comments... it’s NOT about JOE. It’s ABOUT THE CHILDREN that were RAPED and the people who KNEW and not only DID NOTHING, but ACTIVELY PREVENTED people from STOPPING IT.
Go ahead, deny the Freeh report. Side with child rapers and their enablers. Claim that it’s all about old football rivalries. God, you have got to be kidding me.
sorry for the double post.............
I still hold McQueary and his dad responsible, too. Apparently neither of them did any follow up.
And Bobby Bowden says they should remove the statue of Joe Paterno.
LOL
It’s noteworthy that the author of this truly sick vanity hasn’t reappeared since posting this reprehensible garbage. Supporting the homosexual agenda is sufficient for a zot in itself. That offense is further compounded by its hit and run nature. I hope that Penn State football program gets the death penalty and that the author of this mindless drivel is swiftly ushered out of Free Republic.
**IBTZ Ping.**
If I was working late at the office and I saw a child being raped by a co-worker there would be police there in 5 minutes. I would also try to free the child from the situation. As for the coworker, a chair over the head.
The Left has used homosexuals to destroy the Catholic church, the military, the boy scouts and now college football. Don't buy into this crap.
Homosexuality is to blame, not college football. And wait till the final chapter is written on Paterno.
You Penn St. graduates have learned some warped morals.
I drove through it many times as my son went to school west of there. Yeah it is pretty remote. Even saw a mother bear with cubs on the side of the interstate just hangin out.
I think Pa just wanted it to go away but didn’t have the courage to make it happen. Not only did Pa need to call the state police. The junior coach who saw it should have hit him over the head with a chair and called the state authorities
I agree with Coach Bowden. He took a lot of heat while at FSU ("Free Shoes University") and there may have been some sketchy things going on under his watch. But the worst of what he may have done or allowed while coaching the Seminoles isn't in the same league of the depraved criminal culture that existed at "Happy" Valley during the Paterno/Sandusky reign of terror.
When asked why he didn't retire from coaching, Joe Paterno famously remarked: "It would leave college football in the hands of the Jackie Sherrills and Barry Switzers". Well, Sherill's castration of a bull while at Mississippi State is pretty tame stuff indeed compared to the violence permitted by Paterno and his crew at Penn State.
No need to be sorry. I read the first reply and you hit the nail on the head. Too many college sports programs are worshiped to the point that nothing else matters. They may as well pay those college as semi pros and forget about teaching them anything to make it in the real world.
I'm assuming here you're not hoping more young boys get molested so we can find out, so I'll approach it differently.
Are you saying that if you had been aware of what was going on, that you wouldn't have tried to do something about it?
Have to ask, did the name of this MSU basketball star begin with “Earvin” and end with “Johnson”?
I don’t know any details but my daughter may have been in a similar situation to your hypothetical. She’s counseling at a girls camp this week and texted that she had to call Child Protective Services based on a conversation with a camper about something at her home.
Don’t know the details but I’m very proud of her for making a tough decision...probably with much counsel.
I can’t remember. I’ve never been interested in bassetball. It would have been sometime between 83 and 86 or 87 thereabouts.
Lived in PA most of my life.
Like college football.
Have NEVER held any coach above the law or above the need to be a decent human being.
Anyone that does not believe that the homosexual pedophile Sandusky’s action were widely known in the Penn State program is delusional.
I have a real dislike for perverts that abuse children and those that enable them.
This is the possibly the biggest scandal in the history of sports.
Only because of the damage to his legacy, not because of what happened to those kids. I say Bobby's comments, and he still to a degree portrayed Paterno as a victim.
