A Simple Little Prayer Request For my Mimi (Update at Post #170)
7/9/12 | Me

Posted on 07/09/2012 2:12:10 PM PDT by NoGrayZone

Long story short. My cat Mimi (she is actually a he), thought he was a girl when they lived in my backyard for almost a year, is going in for major surgery tomorrow.

I was vetless at the time I decided to bring her in. I took her to an holistic vet, to be sure she was fixed and didn't have anything she could spread to my 2 other kitties (now down to 1) and an over all healthcare check up.

I told the vet about her consistent cough and he said "sometimes cats just cough". I believed it, due to her 40,00 layers of down onto of her 4000 layers of fur.

Anywho, he wanted to do about $3500 worth of "vitamin" testing. I of course balked and asked them to just do testing for anything she could give my other 2 and go a general health check.

She came back negative for anything that could be spread to my 2 others, and that was that.

Mimi continued to cough. I've had her for almost 3 years now and noticed her cough was getting worse. Still vetless, I didn't take her to a vet. Soon before I found my new wonderful vet, I noticed she started panting after one of her fits.

I decided to bring her to this recommended vet. He's about 1 1/2 hours away, on the North Fork, but SOOO worth it.

I told him about the cough and he immediately imitated her cough to a tee. She was diagnosed w/ chronic asthma. I felt so guilty, knowing I allowed her suffering for so long.

He said an x-ray had to be done to be sure her lungs were clear, no fluid build up.

Well, there was no fluid build up, and they also took blood. I/we knew nothing about Mimi, nor her past. The x-ray revealed a mass in her chest. Of course the 1st thing you think of is cancer.

I took her back for a biopsy. With the biopsy results and blood work, it revealed a very high level of liver enzymes. The highest it should be is 103. Hers was 216.

The biopsy revealed not a cancerous mass but a diaphramic hernia......in which the diaphram was opened and her liver eventually moved into her chest.

I asked him what on earth would cause such a thing. He said he usually sees it with animals who have been hit by a car. I told him Mimi was an indoor cat (anyone who has tried to wrangle an indoor/outdoor cat to be strictly indoors know what I'm talking about).

He said she could have been stepped on. My first reaction, since this poor kitty was dumped, it was more likey she was kicked.

Anyway, the rest of her blood work came back fine.

Her surgery is tomorrow morning. If she didn't have the chronic asthma, I would not be so worried. Going under is risky in itself. Add chronic asthma, and well, you can hopefully understand why I am so worried.

I would love, if anyone, even one person, could include Mimi in their prayers tonight. She is a sweetie and Lord only knows what she has been through before I became her mommy.

I thank you for any support and any prayers to be given to her.

I'm posting this at 11:45 pm central time, so you should be in bed by now. I will be home all day tomorrow (am here most of the time), and will pray and think about MiMi tomorrow while that is going on.

I know how you feel. My 4 lb. female Yorkie, Prissy (be a year old next month), needs to be spayed (so the vet says). Was going to do it this month, but it is so hot in Texas now, I'm going to wait until October when it is cooler. That would be cooler for me as I am so old, 105 heat is too much for me to get in and out of my hot car. I need to feel well to take care of her.

A friend said she would sit with me while this is done. I think of a tiny 4 lb. body and how small the female parts must be and worry about a slip of the scalpel. I don't want my little Prissy to go through an operation so I feel really sorry MiMi has to have one. Let us know tomorrow how the surgery went.

Once I found out she was a he, I thought about changing her name. However, she was already responding to Mimi, so I couldn’t!

My kids had a cat that found them about 16 years ago....

They thought it was a girl and named the cat Miss Kitty..
it was a male so they named him Mr. Kitty..

Mr Kitty got hurt reaally bad one day and we didn't have the money for a vet bill so I took Mr Kitty to my dads house
he owned a feed store and was real close to being a vet..

My dad doctored the cat and all was going well so I went back home leaving the cat in my dad's care for a few weeks..
the cat must have gotten mad because as soon as I left my dad said the cat took off....
I was devastated and so were the kids...
in 2 weeks we went back to try and find Mr Kitty ...

I was pretty emotional and I started calling out Mr Kitty
Mr Kitty and less than 1 minute he came out of his hiding place..
he looked great to me....
We went back home and trust me Mr Kitty stayed close to me..
I was telling the neighbors when we got back and said
Mr Kitty is back....
every neighbor (3) said HEY THAT'S MY CAT !!!!
He fooled me lol

I’m saying prayers for Mimi AND you, that Mimi comes through the surgery and that YOU don’t go crazy with worry. It sounds as though Mimi’s got a great Mommy. It’s amazing how these little critters manage to get themselves all tangled up in our hearts. I hope that when Mimi’s feeling better - after the surgery and now that you know about and can treat the asthma - that he’ll feel stronger, less scared and vulnerable. It can take a long time for abused kitties to learn that they need never fear you, that you have only love and caring for them. I’ve had my feral stray Shadow, an older cat who lived in the shelter for three(!) years because no one wanted to take him home, for more than a year, and he’s still got a way to go in learning to trust...but he and I are working on it!

Keeping you & Mimi in my thoughts - can’t help but think it’s gonna help a lot to normalise his liver values after the pressure is eased.

Loving all the graphics on the thread - both the squee-cutsie ones and the FR viking kitty ones!

MIMI UPDATE!!!!

I just got home and the surgery went very very well.....no thanks to all your prayers, support and well wishes. And also for defending me against that mean guy who was zotted!

This morning, I begged God to let Mimi live and begged Him to make her be okay. I also begged him to listen to all of your prayers, given up to Him, by people who don’t even know me or Mimi. Seems like He has answered our prayers. Thank you Lord!!

He came out to talk to me after the surgery and when she started to awake from the anesthesia. He said it went perfect. I asked about her breathing, her heart rate (she was breathing pretty rapidly in the vets office. I told him that isn’t usual at home and that she’s just a fraidy cat and very nervous.

He also said it looked as if she has had this for quite a long time because her diaphragm had started growing over her liver. Lord only knows how long she’s had this affliction, on top of her chronic asthma.

So he says “she’ll be ready to go home tomorrow”. I said “oh no, she’s staying w/ you for a week. I work full time and can’t be here to watch and care for her”.

I told him about crazy Mary (my other) and was afraid she might rip her stitches and if I came home to a bloody mess, I’d hit the floor, lol.

I told him I would rather have him and his medical staff care for her the next week. I brought her mushy food and crunchies, as well as my t-shirt I wore for 2 nights, then rubbed it w/ a fabric softener (you KNOW how kitties love to roll around in your clean clothes).

So, for the next week, I will be without my Mimi, which I already started crying over because it’s so weird to come home and your furball isn’t there, even though I know she’s coming back home.

Again, I cannot thank all of you for your prayers, wellful wishes and especially the attack on the mean jerk!

If I pinged some of you more than once, or twice, perhaps even 3 times, I apologize. Queen of pings I am not!

I am relived it all went so well, but also sad she is not here meowing at me, as she would have been. They are so simple to miss, even if for a day.

Again, thank you ALL and God Bless each and everyone of you.

(Let’s hope I did this right....here we go)

I am so glad the surgery went well. When I read diaphragmatic hernia it took me back to a kitten I rescued...only 1 1/2 lbs...that had the same thing. Only ALL her organs were up in her chest. I found a vet who would attempt to put her organs back in place Pro Bono because I was putting her up for adoption. She was SOOO small and he had big hands and gave it a 50/50 chance. Anyway....This vet had 2 other vet buddies assisting in the operation. One had to literally blow into her lungs constantly -during the whole surgery -to keep her alive. She actually died 3 times. He was telling me how these 3 big guys were inside this little tiny kittens body arranging things. But, she survived! I got her fixed too with the same vet. I named her 'Annabelle' and put her up for adoption when she fully recovered.

back in the mid 80's we aquired a non neutered female and had her neutered...she was at that time an outside dog....When I took her back to the vet for her check up, she had already removed her own stitches....I don't know how but maybe when the healing started the incision itched...Her incision looked good and the doctor laughed when he couldn't find any stitches. She was a sweet farm dog and is now buried in my yard along with a rescued senior I got from LDDR. She came from a kill shelter but one day she was running to the door to be let out and screamed. She had a spontaneous leg break. X rays showed she had cancer of the bone and she has joined Mona in my yard...I only had her for 20 months, she was about 10 yrs old when I got her and the vet said due to age she probably wouldn't survive the chemo, followed by an amputation of the front let....I saw the X rays and the mass was about the size of a tight fist...You could see only one edge of the bone, the mass covered the rest of the bone....she was a good girl...

Your baby will be fine, its amazing how fast animals heal...

Awwwww, she’s so tiny! God must have been guiding those vets. I only wish there were more like them!

I rescued this little manx kitten that had prolapsed colon. My vets -new vet assistant- did surgery 3 times on ‘Penelope’ to get her colon to stay put. SHe also didn’t charge me since kitten was going up for adoption. So, there are some very thoughtful vets out there!

Thanks for the great Mimi news!! I’m so glad his surgery went well, and he’s on the mend. It will be lonely until you can bring him home, but he’s probably better off being cared for at the vets. Maybe you can go visit him in the meantime. I’ll continue to keep Mimi in my prayers.

Thanks for keeping Mimi in your prayers, God Bless you. I thought about going to visit her, however, I’m afraid when she see’s me, she’ll think shes going home.....then I leave her again.

I’m torn. I also might want to take her right then and there. I am emotional drained today so it’s probably not a good idea to think of visiting just yet.

I actually want her back right this second! Who’s going to mew in my face tomorrow morning while scratching my cheek, telling me to move over so she can sleep on my pillow?

It’s only a week, may be a long one, but still just a week. Hopefully crazy Mary won’t get used to Mimi not being here, lol.
