Death rates 1900 and 2010

The New England Journal Of Medicine

The New England Journal of Medicine takes a look at the leading causes of death in the U.S. from 1900 to 2010.

The change is interesting, as is our ever-increasing longevity--something that scientists think may now reverse as a result of the global obesity epidemic.

We've laid the findings out for you in a series of charts (and you can head over to the NEJM's excellent interactive graphic if you want to fiddle).

Exactly, seems like there was no diabetes in 1900

Diabetes is an ancient disease, identifiable since the 1st Century A.D. One of its more famous accounts was from the 17th Century, when a rather arrogant English Knight summoned a rather arrogant doctor, greeting him while being half dressed on a settee, then curtly said:

” ‘So, Quack! I am a dead man, for I piss sweet!”

“Do ye?”, replied the Doctor, “Then prithee piss upon your toes, for they stink damnably!” And, turning on his heels, departed.

Dan(my brother) is still in amazing shape. As a kid, we called him Stretch Armstrong, after the toy, because that’s pretty much how he’s shaped. A natural wrestler, also. In his case, our family genetics were, shall we say, not in favor of good heart condition, even his lifestyle was and is. What saved him was that his employers had equipment at work, in case anyone should have a heart attack, and that there were trained people who used it.

“Could the fact that cancer is now more prevalent be because of our longer life spans? Could it be simply that we live long enough to get it?”

Could obesity be the same situation? We are avoiding a lot more causes of death, living longer, so have the opportunity to get fatter.

For us it’s St. Judes or Salvation Army where we know what we donate will be put to the use they state they will be using it for. The Union Mission in Memphis is another good place, they have a 85% success rate with addicts.

You have to check out any org you donate to these days. If most of the money goes to ads, mailings and salaries, then they are NOT helping those they say they are.

I said nothing about the government being a provider. Just that the MD association does not perform as it states it does. It is what they raise the huge amounts of money for after all.

I was reacting to posting about exporting Mickey D’s to foreign countries thus making the foreigners fat, like they didn’t stuff themselves to become fat.
