Death rates 1900 and 2010

The New England Journal Of Medicine

The New England Journal of Medicine takes a look at the leading causes of death in the U.S. from 1900 to 2010.

The change is interesting, as is our ever-increasing longevity--something that scientists think may now reverse as a result of the global obesity epidemic.

We've laid the findings out for you in a series of charts (and you can head over to the NEJM's excellent interactive graphic if you want to fiddle).

***Considering medical knowledge in 1900, I would bet that the cause of a great number of deaths were mis-diagnosed.***

Several in my family died of ...”Acute Indigestion.”

When I started having heart pains they thought it was Indigestion. It was a blocked artery (Widow maker they called it)and I dodged a heart attack with a stent.

I bet my kin also died of heart attacks.

Yep. Aging is a major factor in causing cancer. As we get older our immune system weakens.

For those of you interested in the cancer differential, hold your nose and watch the PBS documentary “The Truth About Cancer.” Its available online.

It was made, in part, to counter the Komen/Livestrong fueled mentality that if you fight hard enough and don’t give up you can beat the odds. The bottom line is that if cancer is metastatic when found it’s going to kill 9 out of 10 within 5 years.

An oncologist also makes the point that Lance Armstrong got lucky - as lucky as you can be with cancer anyway - in that testicular cancer is one of the only types of cancer that responds very well to chemo even after its spread to distant organs.

If nothing else kills you, your heart will eventually give out. So, shouldn’t the goal be for heart disease to overtake all other causes of death?
The majority of elderly people who die of “natural” causes never get an autopsy. Is it just convenient for their physician to sign off on whatever they were treated for? My uncle died last year. He was diabetic, had arteriosclerosis and had just started dialysis. His doctor put down cause of death “renal failure”. Which was it really? Diabetes ruined his kidneys but his heart just gave out in his sleep.

my cousin’s son had MD, needed one, all they offered was what he had standard wheel chair.
The only organization I donate to is the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
My FIL had lymphoma 15 years ago and over the 5 years of his treatment, he had trouble paying some of the medical bills.
He went to Leukemia/Lymphoma Society and they picked up the tab for about 90% of what he couldn't pay.

Why do you want to put all those people out of business?
And they say there's no such thing as a STUPID question. Idiot.

After my thyroid was removed due to cancer, my endocrinologist told me that many endos were considering that thyroids may not necessarily have to be removed. He explained that autopsies of many people who have passed on for other reasons also had thyroid cancer that went unnoticed.

However, Judge Reinquist died from thyroid cancer. When I learned of the “abnormal” cells in mine, there was no way in hell I’d of considering not having it removed. Ironically, half of it has to be removed and tested before confirming the cancer, and if there, the likelihood of the other half having it is high, which mine did.

How many of the 2010 numbers categorized as Suicide, Nephropathies, Diabetes, and to a far larger extent Cerebrovascular disease, Noninfectious airways disease, Heart disease and even Cancer, that are directly related to alcoholism in its tertiary stage?

I don’t see abortion on the list.

Sadly, one the most dangerous places to be in America is in the womb.

I don’t see war or genocide on those lists. Ideology is a cause of death too.

A couple of years ago I read a study that said among the Top 3 killers was drug overdose. Not heroin etc but people (mostly older) being over prescribed.

Many old people are committing suicide this way after their spouse dies. You hear all those stories about how the spouse dies of a broken heart a few days after their husband/wife dies??? Makes a good story and sounds romantic and heart warming but what many are doing is offing themselves.

Global? I thought the rest of the world was going hungry while we "selfish/arrogant" Americans stuffed our faces?

Developed countries are becoming more obese and even countries like China as they become more prosperous are now starting to have a problem.

There may now be a simple and highly effective way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Just brush your teeth with powdered baking soda once or twice a week!

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2769347/posts

I showed this to a dentist friend who had spent his early career vetting medical research and he was very impressed. He noted that baking soda is a specific against the common types of oral spirochetes that may be to blame, killing them in just five seconds.

He added that dentists have long suspected a connection between chronic gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s; and on reflection he noted that the current upswing in the total number of Alzheimer’s patients began not too long after the public started using commercial toothpaste instead of baking soda.

He also noted that the “old formula” was baking soda mixed with table salt. Doctors have long known that warm, salty water (or saliva, I suppose in this case), is one of the most effective *general* treatments for oral problems, as well as the sinuses, Eustachian tubes and throat, including infections, both bacterial and viral.

I love my wife but the idea that I can't live without her doesn't compute.

I have seen couples who fail to develop relationships outside of their spouses. Perhaps is is these folks who off themselves when the spouse croaks?

Yes, I agree. They still had us full of several vestigial unnecessary organs back then. They didn’t know the appendix is the gi tract’s restart button if you have a big good bacteria die-off, for example. Didn’t really know what the pancreas did either.

The irritant in today’s toothpastes for many people is SLS, sodium laurel sulfate. It’s a foaming agent. It is used in other industrial uses such as degreasing machine components. It is known to be an irritant for many people.
