A hundred years ago and that's when this picture was taken, in 1912 men didn't leave home without a hat. Boys wore caps. This is a socialist political rally in Union Square in Manhattan. There may be a bare head or two in this crowd, but I think those heads are women's.

Hey thanks, Hulka! A new hat store to spend some more money!
My guess was cars before I read that. It's not just headroom though. If you have your own car you don't need a hat for protection from the elements as much either.

Total BS!
Vitamin D, generated by sunlight is the biggest defense from skin cancer. Sun lotions are all carcinogenic, as is anything that reduces production of Vitamin D.
Sun good - Shade bad.

Is that the new term for Albany?

Sounds like Tom Dowd....

So if some is good, more must be even better, right?
Actually, I think the author is right.
I like wearing fedora hats, felt in the winter, panama hats in the summer. However when I get into my car—I invariably take it off, as, the hat hits the roof and gets uncomfortable.
So going out in public consists of taking the hat off in the car, putting it back on when I get out...and, then taking if off indoors. Just too much trouble. Unless I’m going to be outside all day, I tend to leave it home about half the time...

No, it was indeed North Berkeley, but they were on their way to Golden Gate Fields in Albany (about to board a shuttle).
Saw a few of them again today too. They had on their “dollar day” admission bracelets.
Word.
I'm in the rain gutter business, which means I spend my days outside in the sun on ladders and rooftops. At the very least, during the warm months, I wear a bandana covering my head, but when the Texas sun really bears down, I've got one of my straw cowboy hats on.
I couldn't work in the sun without one.
I’m Impressed! :)

No, but sun does not cause skin cancer, and it actually prevents the worst kind: melanoma.
.
That's one of many reasons I like my pickup truck ...
so NPR blames the republican and exhonerates the democrat.
npr praises mass trasit and condemns the car...
Go figure, eh?
Anyone around here who wears a cowboy hat is immediately suspected of being an a-hole.
