I'm looking for a alternative to gmail. Any suggestions for s safe private preferably free email? Or am I living in fantasy land.
LOL! Be sure to cc: me, too!
...okay... they're on the way...
There is a way: GLSDO SPOR FKUS MIER AGDE PLKN RSHW LOWR ZPMJ RHPM POFO JQBK , But you will have to change it daily or it will be deciphered at Bletchley Park.
Add one more to the “There’s no such thing as safe email” column. You should always regard anything send via email as though you posted it to a public message board. If you must send something by email, and you want it to be secure, use GPG or some other form of encryption. (GPG is the free version of PGP and can be run on Windows.)
not only is email not private, but those little tags on your snail mail guarantee that those are not privat either.
Not true. gpg encryption with a 3 kb key is pretty safe.
Fastmail. Free but I chose to pay $4.95/yr so I didn’t have to see ads. You can even pay more.
You should have been supplied with an email address to go along with your Net service.. If not, check up on how much it it will cost extra (probably not more than $2-$5/month added to your bill).
“Even here on FR if you are a monthly donor and use your FR email....it aint private if anybody wants to know whats in it.”
It’s even worse than that! I’m not a monthly donor, and my name is not really Bogus Pachysandra. But this morning I received an email at my private home email address. It’s from YouGov, and it’s a survey request. Although it came to my email, in the body of the email is the greeting, “Dear Bogus.” Somehow mined from FR?
Juno is still there?! :o I used it a decade and a half ago... I thought it went under though (along with bigfoot)..
I have used Yahoo for years with no known problems. But none can be considered safe. I have for years put nothing in emails that I could regret later, no paper trail here.
I’m afraid you’ll have to use a one-time pad, and it might get cumbersome.
What you don’t like having your email data mined and having targeted ads sent to you?
Setting up your own email server would probably be the only way to have some privacy. The emphasis is on the word some.
If your Server is setup to use TLS, then it automatically sends it encrypted as long as the receiving Email Server has TLS implemented. (Not all do).
But at least your emails won’t be data mined like GMAIL, Yahoo or HOT mail.
A 2nd less secure option would be to open an account on a secondary provider like your ISP. Their not as likely to be actively data mining your emails to send you targeted ads.
PGP does cost, but GPG does the same thing, and is fully interoperable.
I've been trying to get people interested in encryption since PGP was a DOS command line program.
I've come to the conclusion that people just don't give a damn about privacy, despite what they claim.
No more secure for long term usage but you can send an email and then delete the Mail Null address...thereby keeping any return email from reaching you. Your main address is then secure.
It helps in keeping Spam down but does not add much in the way of security overall.
I have a friend with this type of e-mail
