What Was Whitney Houston's Best Song? By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper
Singing superstar Whitney Houston has died at age 48, her publicist reported Saturday. Few details on the cause or circumstances of the singer's death were immediately available, though her life was troubled by drug use.
Whatever the facts of her death, fans are left with memories of some of the most stunning and powerful songs ever recorded by a female artist. Here are some of the songs we will remember Houston by.
"Didn't We Almost Have It All?"

She had so many flaws. We all do. But she was magnificent.
“the death of one of my 50s or 60s idols.”
Unfortunately, I’m usually surprised to find out some of these are (or were, 24 hrs prior) alive!
Then I find out many of them are “only” my parents’ age or a bit younger - and it seems impossible! Sometimes 1960 seems not so long ago, other times it seems it’s been a century.
Being a fan of music in general (yes, I listened to “oldies” about as much if not more than ‘80s), I am always interested and a bit saddened by these deaths. In Houston’s case, though, she is a bit young and thus it’s somewhat super-shocking. I’m surprised to find she’s younger than my sister.
Yes. Thank you for your post—the whole of it. I agree and know she was a believer. She also lost to her demons. God bless us all that struggle with demons may God reign supreme!
I liked the credits on the label, which I believe included (W. Houston/F. Key)
It was just amusing to see the author's name.

RIP, Whitney.
She was very talented and I love her voice. But I absolutely hate her rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, as well as many who emulate her. Stylized crap. Anyone who sings it should first have to spend a night getting bombarded at Ft. McHenry. They would sing a different tune.
Now there's a singer, with my favorite of his being Durham Town. Roger Whittaker, Vaughn Monroe and Tex Beneke comprise a short list of some of the finest male vocalists of my lifetime, each with a distinctive style.
With all due respect to Whitney Houston fans, I'd personally rank Karen Carpenter at the head of the list for female vocalists. She added a totally new dimension to Leon Russell's This Masquerade.
I've never understood how people are considered good singers because they scream at the top of their lungs and try to turn any note into an attempt to go up and down the scale 32 times.
Same thing with that munchkin up in Canada, what's her name, Celine Dion? When Dion got done with My Heart Will Go On, my ears were bleeding.
Sorry, but Houston might have had a couple good songs, but in this case, Dolly's song I will always love you, Houston ruined it with her "I will always love you ou ou ouou ou ou!"

“I Look To You”
Some of her “gospel” music sung about her demons.
You’re totally right about “And I Will Always Love You.” I don’t dislike Whitney, she had some great songs early in the ‘80s, but she just about ruined Dolly’s gorgeous, poignant song. It was soulful and almost.. trembling, the way Dolly sang it, so beautiful. Then here comes Whitney and it sounds like she’s screaming it through a bullhorn. Unreal. I hate that such a great song is now associated with that performance. Instead of Dolly’s original.
Wow, you’re crazy. I’m not even a huge Dolly fan, but the original is about as full as emotion as you can get - it was about Dolly’s breakup with her husband/manager, and it was poignant and almost halting. Compared to Whitney, god rest her soul, who took it as an exercise in vocal range showboating and over-performing to extremes.
But, to each their own.
To me, Dolly’s version of the song was rather ho-hum and forgettable, while Whitney’s version ranks as one of my all-time favorite songs.
We each have our own taste in music.
By far, the anthem was one of her greatest pieces of work, especially since she had only once chance to perform it live. As a lifelong Giants fan, Super Bowl XXV was one of my most cherished childhood memories made sweeter when Houston chose to face the Giants’ sideline as opposed to the Bills’ on the same side as the NFL officials as she was directed to do.
For me, it was One Moment In Time. Just loved that song especially when it was connected to the Olympics.
“All The Man That I Need” is one of my favorites also. Beautiful woman. Beautiful voice. Too bad she got mixed up with that no talent jerk Bobby Brown.

I agree with All The Man That I Need. I loved Run To You, too.
She was beautiful and had a great voice, but, like Celine Dion, she would wind up screaming. Could not stand to listen.
And I am really, really sick of the obscene amount of coverage her death has gotten. Last night, with FOX, you would have thought a head of state had passed away.
God rest her soul.
Her rendition of the National Anthem is the only thing from her that made it to my iPod, so I have to choose that.
