Is it a fair question to ask... Is Mormonism Christian or is it not?

If you care enough to respond and tell me it's not a fair question, please explain why not.

Since God knew, before He even created them, that these millions of well-meaning, misinformed souls were going to die as Mormons, do you really believe He would send them to hell for that?

Sure, why not? Hundreds of millions of unfortunate people who lived and died in India and Japan, for example, are going to burn forever. Same with Jews who didn't see the light before heading into the gas chambers. What difference do a few Mormans make?

It’s Christian in the same way Christianity is Jewish.

Is Mormonism Christian or is it not?

Mormons believe that all of us are literal children of God (Heavenly Father), and that before coming to earth, all of us were literally born in heaven to him and his celestial wife (i.e. Heavenly Mother). This is possible, according to Mormonism because god is an exalted/immortal man, His wife is an exalted/immortal woman. Both of them were at one time just like us, but gradually progressed to godhood. These beliefs, which originated with Joseph Smith, serve as the foundation for every other Mormon teaching.

" That's why genuine Baptists are emphatic in defending the rights of Mormons (or any other group) to worship as they believe. And the phony variety are just as emphatic in condemning them to hell and denouncing them as a cult. "

And the tens of thousands of ex-mormons who did have their lives shattered, and do say it's a cult, they're all "phonies" too, right?

Or is the word "anti-mormon"? Because every time an LDS is challenged on fundamental beliefs, they always revert to the "anti-mormon conspiracy" as their theological victim card.

My apologies to all the "Baptists" out there, I had no idea you were so closely allied with the latter day saint agenda....if so, I can avoid "Baptists" too...if Romney is elected I will avoid this country. I'm too old to be told what I can say and who I will support, whatever epithets the "mormon allies" may choose.

Thus he thinks he is the fulfillment of the “white horse prophecy”

I started a thought and didnt finish it...

Tn the “white horse prophecy” the Mormons claim that the Constitution of the United States will “hang by a thread” and that only their Mormon priests will be able to rush in and save it..

Joey Smith started this silliness because the American governemt would not allow him to have a private army of 100,000 when he already had a 5000 strong army of cuthroats while there were only 8000 soldiers in the US army...

plus the governemtn would not roll over and play dead to any of his other threats or unreasonable requests..

Well has the Constitution had anything happen to it that Joey Smith and his cohorts including Willard Mitt Romney consider adverse since Joey Smiths death in 1855 ???

Sure several new amendments..

Blacks whom Joey Smith considered should stay as slaves were set free by President Abraham Lincoln whom the Mormons hated because his party stood against slavery and polygamy

Blacks were given American citizenship by the COTUS

Black man were given the vote by the COTUS

Women were given the vote by ther COTUS

Blacks were given equal rights

So now Mormon bishop and high priest wants to fulfill the Mormon god prophecy by being the “one mighty and strong” who rides in on a white horse to save the COTUS..

and take over the country

and implement a theocracy of Mormonism and dictatorship with him as president for life and crowned king..

Catholics may pray for the Pope, as they may pray for any other soul on earth. The don’t pray to the Pope. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Based on a false prophet who is elevated above normal men - Jesus reiterated the warnings about false prophets.

I won't claim a Mormon cannot be a Christian, but not likely if he buys into the whole doctrine. Let's face it, most Christian religions have different beliefs about different rites and what the Bible supposedly requires and some even seem to have some beliefs/practices that are contrary to the bible, but I'm not aware of any that worship anyone but Jesus (although I have trouble with praying to saints and such).

How's that for a non-answer - I guess one would have to explore Mormonism more than I in able to come up with a semi-definitive answer.

Won’t go into the numerous criteria of what is a cult but Mormanism fits the definition on several levels. Catholicism fits the criteria as well. Pray to the Pope? Not I. Nor will I pray to “Mother Mary”.

Your (I can only assume) willful ignorance is astounding. Please do yourself a favor and become acquainted with what the Catholic church actually believes and teaches, instead of the misinformned anti-Catholic teachings of various sects or churches.

The Catholic Church holds to ALL of the fundamental doctrines of Christianity, embodied in the ecumenical creeds. (Indeed, it could be argued that the Catholic Church was responsible for the formulation of those creeds, which form the basis of even Protestant church teachings.)

In stark contrast, Mormons, who hold to a "plurality of gods" and are thus polytheistic, denying the historic, monotheistic understanding of Christians regarding the Trinity. They reject the orthodox teaching of Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God and Creator, who has made a once-for-all atonement for mankind.

Mormons hold to a convoluted belief that Adam was the "god of this world" and that Jesus was the "spirit brother" of Satan. Moreover, according to Mormons there are innumerable other worlds which presumably have their own "saviors." Thus Jesus is not unique but is only one among innumerable "saviors." Thus Mormonism denies the unique, finished work of Christ on the cross.

Protestants surely have their theological disagreements with Catholics, but for you to lump the Catholic Church with this heterodox sect is wholly unwarranted.

BTW I am not Catholic but Evangelical Protestant.

After spending 4 years in Utah on business, we became fairly familiar with LDS teaching. The membership of our Lutheran church in SLC was 25% former LDS. We had an active evangelism effort among former LDS. And, no, it is not a Christian faith. It uses Biblical teaching that suits its beliefs, while rejecting those that confront its belief.

If accepting Christ as Lord and Saviour is all that’s required, then they are at least as much Christian as some tribesman who accepted Christ at a missionary outpost and then went back to his tribe to live out the remainder of his days having no further contact with Christians.

You missed what I was trying to say. Of course there is only one LORD and SAVIOR.

My point is, according to scripture, you are as much a sinner as any Mormon, any athiest, any homosexual, or any murderer in the eyes of God. It is only by grace that we are saved.

If you do believe that Jesus Christ is Lord (which I do as well), then you believe that Jesus should judge who is “Christian”, not you, not your preacher, and not the people on this thread. Our savior knows what’s in people’s hearts. You do not.

The thread question, “Is Mormonism Christian...?” is in itself unChristian because it incites people to place themselves in Christ’s role as our judge and savior. It encourages people to pride instead of prayer and reflection. It does nothing to bring Mormons to Christ and shuts them out instead. Shame on us!

There seems to be a lot of people on this thread who are happy to usurp Christ’s role as judge. They quickly condemn motes in other’s eyes while ignoring the logs in their own. This is a sin.

As a Christian, I try to lovingly witness and not judge, mainly because I am too stupid to understand God’s plan. In the end, it comes down to your personal relationship with our savior, not how many people you condemn on a political discussion board. The Mormons are no different.

Spread love, not condemnation.

I believe in the power of the Gospel unto salvation, if one confesses the Lordship of Christ, confesses sin, and believes Salvation is by Christ and Christ alone, then they become Christian in spite of their other quirky beliefs.

The movement of the leadership of the Church, has been more to John 3:16 than away from it.

I believe in the Power of John 3:16 to save, no matter what cult you may find yourself in. In the Judeo Christian Code, Romney is bound by the 4th commandment: “Honor thy father and thy mother” For him not to honor their faith would be difficult.

How do you know if you are saved? It is by the fruit you shall know. As a demonination, there are more Mormons leading more upstanding lives than most other Christian demoninations that I know.

As for all the ecsoteric and mystical beliefs, I personally reject them.

Liberals love it when they provoke a religious squabble with conservatives. Do not fall for it. Be charitable as you are.

No they are not Christian. Yes it is a fair question.

They deny central Christian tenets.

God is eternal and immortal and always has been. Contradicts Mormons that all gods were once men that evolved their way into godhood by doing certain things.

Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, and has always been God. This is not the Jesus Christ of Mormonism.

Mormons teach Satan was Jesus’ brother. Christians know Lucifer was a created angel that rebelled and was given the name Satan.

In Mormonism you earn salvation (godhood). Christians gain salvation by receiving Christ as Savior and Lord.

There are plenty of other differences but these are some major ones.

The poster didn’t ask whether it was a religion or not, they asked if it was Christian or not. The question asked inherently supports Mormonism being a religion by asking if it is Christian or not.

The teachings and doctrines of Mormonism are not the teachings and doctrines of Christianity.

For a good and short review of that - look at Walter Martin’s “Kingdom of the Cults”.

Otherwise, go to Christian ministries on the web who specialize in CULT GROUPS and they’ll have a section in there about Mormonism, which will also explain it to you.

There’s ample Christian material on the web to keep you reading for weeks and months ... about how Mormonism does not teach Christian doctrine and also uses material that they consider to be “authoritative” - which no Christian group will consider to be authoritative.

Have fun reading ... :-)
