Rick Santorum was thrown out of Pennsylvania when as 12 year incumbent, he lost his 2006 Senate race to Bob Cssey by 17 percent. It was literally thrown out of office. Are there any Pennsylvania freepers or history buffs that can shed light on why Santorum was literally thrown out of office? Casey's margin of victory was the largest ever for a Democratic Senate nominee in Pennsylvania, and the largest margin of victory for a Senate challenger in the 2006 elections. Can we more thoroughly vet Santorum by listing why he lost so badly?
IN other words, GIngrich has said different things at different times to different groups of people.
SOmething people are attacking Santorum for. You know it wasn’t just a picture, and that Gingrich did not ALWAYS speak out against cap-and-trade, and that he DID in fact support insurance mandates at one time, before he said he didn’t.
I’m not one to criticize candidates who change their position on issues, if there’s a good explanation for it. But let’s not pretend that just because Gingrich said the right thing one place, that he never ever said the opposite at any other time.
I’ll let others decide whether Gingrich appearing at a congressional hearing to testify against a cap-and-trade bill is “doing something”, while appearing on a national TV advertisement with Nancy Pelosi urging Americans to ask congress to do something about global warming isn’t “doing something”. They are both just TALKING after all, and which do you think had a bigger impact of the global warming debate?
Newt knew Florida was winner takes all and happy until he lost. Rick has 12 delegates. Where do you get 4?
Gingrich has the intellect, Santorum doesn’t.
Santoprum be painted as a radical right wing extremist, not have an answer to it and be viewed as too extreme to be president, just as he was painted in his last senate race. Only difference is this time the money spent to attack him will have many more zero’s to the left of the decimal.
Gingrich may not be the most likeable, but he smart enough to take it to the press and the left and make them look like fools in the process, Santorum is milk toast.
I am so sick of people who didn’t and don’t live in PA and never watched Santorum and know anything about the guy politically tell me what he can do, I have lived in PA since 1986 and I can tell you, he is HATED in PA, across the political spectrum for a REASON.. if his name were up for the Senate this time around in PA, he’d lose just as badly as he did in 2012. You are dilluding yourself if you think this guy in remotely the calibre of politician to handle a presidential campaign and race against Obama.
He couldn’t handle the attacks against him in 06 which were peanuts by comparison to what is going to happen during this campaign.
Santorum is playing above his pay grade, he’d be an ok VP, but that truly is about as good as this guy is.
No, Santorum would lose a PA Senate race this year by 15+ points just as he did in 06. He truly is hated across the political spectrum here... and folks that don’t live in PA need to wake up to that reality. HE is HATED in PA, across the political spectrum, he has ZERO support here, and there is a REASON, and a damned good one. He was THROWN from office for a reason folks. He didn’t lose a close one, he was TOSSED.
Has anyone ever asked Newt why he didn’t run in 2008? Was he satisfied with the the choices?
Does anyone think that Romney could have been elected had he stood for reelection?
Fla is NOT a winner take all. The rules are clear. Before April first there are no winner take all states. Unless you want to play like a liberal and ignore the rules when it benefits your chosen candidate? You'd be howling if it was Santorum.
Who the hell challenges a result before an election?!.
Rick has 12 delegates. Where do you get 4?
Checked online again.
Gingrich 32
Santorum 17
The local media blasted this info nonstop, as if it was the crime of the century to have your children live in DC with you when you are a Senator. Also since Santorum was paying Pennsylvania's notoriously sky high property tax bill on his home, I always felt he was justified to get a cyberschool education for his children. Praising with faint Damn, if you ask me, but the locals bought it. Also Casey was sold as a right to life Dem, which may be the key to winning heavy Catholic PA.
IMO, there are three critical swing states that we must win two of: Ohio, PA, and FLA. I think Florida is already toast for Obama, and I believe Santorum can bring in Prolife, Catholic, Anti-Obamacare Pennsylvania.
Because you kept watch on the house 24/7? Or because the Democrat party hack on the school board said so?
I have no idea when the Santorums moved out of the Penn Hills house. But the point of the matter is that the lived in the 18th district (Penn Hills) while he was our congressman for four years.
Lots of congress critters do not even own property in their district once they make a career of it in Washington. Richard Gephart was famous for using his elderly mother's home in Missouri for residence purposes while he was in Washington. Of course, nobody said a thing about it because he was a Democrat.
Santorum was doing what was legally required to at least maintain a home and pay taxes in the school district. I did the same thing when I was living in Japan and was renting out my home. The local school district was providing my kids with books and educational materials with full knowledge of my situation-- because I disclosed it.
Nobody made an issue of it because I wasn't occupying a U.S. Senate seat which the Democrats wanted.
So whether Santorum's family occupied it, rented it, had furniture or whatever is really not relavant. He owned it and he paid taxes to the school district. As a taxpayer in the district, he had the same right to use the school district resources which I, or any other taxpayer in the district, would have been given.
Even if the kids were registered in the Cyber School, Santorums property taxes plus the state per pupil aid still would have resulted in a net financial gain for the district. There is no crime and no victim here, unless it is the Santorum kids.
Santorum withdrew his kids from the cyber school not because he did anything wrong but because he did not want to make an issue of it.
Do the math: Cost of paying out of district tuition for using a Cyber School versus the cost of owning, maintaining and paying taxes on a modest home in the district which produced little to no rental income. You are creating a non-existent scandal just like the biddy on the school board who was so worked up about this that she didn't know (or didn't care) that her son was a key crook in a house burglarly ring,
Your memory is either short, or you are willfully being ignorant.
Santorum got himself in trouble on that topic on several fronts.. He lied about living in the home when he obviously did not and When he was running against Wofford he made a bit deal that WOFFORD didn’t live in PA and his family lived in DC... So it comes full circle.
Santorum attacked his opponent for doing it, then when he was in the same position he did it, you think that’s not something that going to cause you problems you are out of touch with reality.
Claimin residency for nearly 9 years when you bought a home in Virginia and moved your family there, and keeping an vacant home (and yes we know it was vacant, because you don’t have to be a vigilante to walk up to a vacant house a look into a window and see no furniture, which is exactly what was the deal with that home.
You can keep trying to spin Santorum as a national politician, he’s not. I challenge you right here right now, go hire rasmussen or one of the other polling companies to conduct a poll right now in PA, ask them Casey V Santorum 2012 Senate PA, should cost a couple of hundred bucks, and you’ll see Santorum would lose still by a large margin.
You don’t have to like the fact Santorum got caught doing the exact same thing he chastise opponents for earlier in his career, but the fact is he was, and voters didn’t like it, or tons of other things he had done over the years.
Santorum couldn’t play the “Everyone does it” excuse because he went out of his way to make it a campaign issue against wofford... Like I said, Santorum isn’t remotely astute, politically savvy or intelligent enough to handle a national campaign that will be awaiting the nominee.. He couldn’t handle some outside money and leftist activists in 2006.. he got painted effectively as a radical and 2012 national race will be 100 if not a 1000 times larger and nastier and he couldn’t answer it in 06 and won’t be able to handle it in 12.
It cracks me up. After attacking every other candidate for “helping Romney”, now that one stands to do some actually damage to Romney, they want to tear him down.
Seems to me that the accusers are the ones most openly and directly helping Romney now.
I suppose Gingrich or Romney would win Pa. by a landslide.
We have seen the enemy and he is us...
Wow, apples and oranges look the same do you don’t they?
Santorum is not a national politician, he’s a state politician, whos state THREW HIM THE HELL OUT, and would heartily do so again today. To try to take 2 politicians from different areas and throw them in PA as a comparison is silliness.
You’ll come to see what the folks in PA saw in Santorum soon enough, all he is doing is playing spoiler to ensure the Romney nod. Should by some miracle he wind up a the top of the ticket, you’ll see the milk toast that Santorum is. He’s got a spine on social conservative issues, I’ll give him that, but he doesn’t have remotely the ability to handle the campaign that is coming on countless levels.
PA is where this guy is FROM, they are the folks that know him best, and they threw him out, and would happily do so again, by a huge margin. To think this guy can carry a national campaign that is going to be as ugly as this election is going to be shows utter naivete.
The fix is clearly in on this guy, the press hasn’t bothered to challenge him hard on anything, they know they have to keep him propped up to ensure Romney gets the nod, and are doing so happily.
I’ll vote for whoever the nominee is, but those that think Santorum is their white knigh, will soon find out he’s milk toast.
IN the last poll in whish he was included, last year, for the senate race, he had 49% of the support, with the rest scattered across 8 other possible candidates.
I don’t know if that shows that he was the prohibitive favorite among the republican primary voters, or if he was only marginally acceptable because of name recognition.
One thing that I can say is certain. He is universally hated by HamiltonJay. So he can’t count on your vote.
Swing State Poll December 8, 2011:
Pennsylvania: Obama 46 - Romney 43; Obama 48 - Gingrich 40Interestingly, it appears nobody has polled Pennsylvania since mid-December, so the polls aren't that useful -- this was when Gingrich was at his zenith, and before Santorum "surged" as it were to take Iowa:
Wow, a whole 31? Golly.
My math is a little shaky, but I think 31 is still a long way from 1144.
Yes, it's a given that Santorum, a solid conservative, had a lot of detractors in a "blue" state like Pennsylvania, especially in a "Democratic" year like 2006.
As to who is playing "spoiler," perhaps it's Gingrich who is out to split the conservative vote and give Romney the nod.
Yes it is. And so is your logic.
Have a nice day.
